I think he's talking about the unsportsmanlike call on our sideline after the pick. It looked like one of the coaches (or several of them) got in the refs way when he was trying to run down the sideline. I guess the 'get back coach' needs a 'get back coach' too.

The decision to start Holley at QB was very bold and turned out to look brilliant. Sure we lost our #1 and #2 QB but we've got a lot of experience in Bollas and Reardon standing on the sidelines. He really put his neck on the line giving Holley his first start in this big of a game. Coming into the game he had played a total of 27 games for Kent and only attempted one pass (an incompletion). Today he threw for nearly 300 yards. The fact that he seems very reluctant to play a traditional QB like Bollas tells me he's finally realized that Kent doesn't have the resources to have a traditional passing attack. For that to work you need a good QB, a good line, and good receivers with size. The most successful QB's we've had are run heavy QB's and he seems to get that. When you can't build a complete offense putting your best all around athlete at QB is a good idea. This game actually gave me some hope going forward. If nothing else, Rankin and Holley should be fun to watch the rest of the year.

Now for the criticism. I mentioned Holley has played 27 games in a Kent uniform before today. He's been a part of some really bad offensive performances during those 27 games. Today he became the first Kent player with over 400 yards total offense since Josh Cribbs in '04. Yes, that means even Edelman never did what he did today. So that tells me the coaching had no idea what they had in this kid and did not know how to use him.

I see the first point your trying to make, but I think Holley's performance yesterday bodes against Haynes for your point that he never knew what he had. Holley was a proven QB on a power-house high school program that went to state. He just now gets a chance to play at QB after being on some historically awful offenseses? And let's face it, although you could always tell Holley had heart as a running back he was never more than a mediocre (at best) RB.

Seeing Holley take advantage of his opportunity as he did yesterday on a week of practice makes me wonder what he could've done with a system and playbook built for him and time to learn it.

Letting this talent slip through the cracks is just another massive miscue on Haynes & Co IMO. At this point it's just one of those "what might have been" situations.. This game is gonna take awhile to shake...

Let's not get overboard with Holley. ...

Give him big credit for stepping into a no-win situation and nearly pulling it out ... but he had the element of surprise in his favor as well. And he was going against a pretty bad defense.

Again, he made a bad defense look bad, so credit to him. But now he's on tape and read-option football can be defended very well, especially against teams that don't pass very good and/or have poor receivers, and KSU has both.

Here's hoping his grit and toughness are worth a couple of wins, ... but a guy one year removed from hip surgery running 34-times a game the rest of the season does not sound like a recipe for success.

Kent still needs a QB. .... and a few playmakers to go with him.

I agree with you! I was in no means trying to imply that Holley would have been a sure-fire lock to be the next Cribbs or Edelman, but it really sucks that he never got the chance.. Also, I agree 100% there's no way his body will hold up doing what he did yesterday the rest of the year- he's lucky to of made it through the one game.

I guess what I was getting at is it just really sucks that as bad as our QB situation has been that the coaches had the "bright" of idea of converting an athletic duel threat guy that was a high school QB to RB when that's what we've lacked ever since he came in as a freshman. C'est la vie :/... You guys have a nice work week, see ya in Buffalo.

I took your original post in exactly that vein ... just looking ahead ...

as per the coaching decision ... Did not see enough of Agner to judge, but Mitchell did have the 'look' of the kind of QB necessary to at least compete, based on the first few games ... bigger issue is playmakers aren't there, no matter who the QB is, and that makes all of them look worse than perhaps they really are ...

First off there was no hip surgery or hip injury for that matter. It was a back injury although a serious one it is healed. And wait and see it was no fluke! He is a athlete with heart and a will to win. What QB do we have with that? I said back when they were freshman that he should have had a chance. Even with film it worked for N. Ill with Lynch.

Watch the press conference and Haynes will tell you why the move was made

I noticed also that the offense seemed to rally around him and make some plays. When you believe you always have a chance

Eh. I agree you have to have confidence, faith, and belief. It definitely helps, however, sometimes you are just outmatched and all the belief in the world won't help you. (see Alabama).
