Quarry on Cinemax
Has anyone watched it yet? It's based and filmed in Memphis. Been reading up on it and it's getting a lot of good reviews right out the gate. Cinemax doesn't have a lot of original series but the ones it does have are good.

I've read all the books and am a big Max Allan Collins fan so the series should be great

Just got to it on my DVR. Really good episode. Looks like it's gonna be a good show. The "Memphis shots" were done extremely well.

Filmed in New Orleans, IRRC, but set here. Some location shots I think were set here. I hope they transfer production here someday, but with our state, ... Itd be nice to have that and see Million Dollar Quartet succeed to continue here.

Wait, was it actually shot in Memphis or elsewhere?

Shot in Memphis definitely. Not all of it but a good share of it. Just watched the 2nd episode and it's a really good show. Very gritty. Someone definitely did their research on Memphis history. Shots of E&H, The Arcade, Stax, Memphis New Bridge(under construction) and other areas of town.

I should have said some location shots were FILMED here, not set here, but the vast majority was in N.O., unfortunately. Again, I hope that will one day change, and it is ALL done here. Unless there's a travel sequence.

I'm under the impression it's like CSI and CSI Miami which I think are based in LA, but would get set shots in their namesakes... I hope I am wrong and it is far more than that. Esp as Memphis is quite a unique character itself.

Watched the first two episodes. I thought that the second episode dragged along. I am not sure that I will continue watching it. I did see several Memphis landmarks including that liquor store neon sign that was recently repaired.

It's also set in Memphis shortly after the Vietnam War.
It would be hard to shoot some locations as so much has changed since that time period.
As far as the show, it is.... interesting. I would think it would be critically acclaimed, but not sure if it will be extremely popular. Pacing is an issue and storyline seems a bit off... but I must admit that I have liked it and will give it a couple of more episodes.

I read there is a partially constructed "new" bridge done via CGI in one episode.

Quarry is a weird choice. Collins has several other series they could have picked, including his flagship Nate Heller novels. Since Road To Perdition was a hit I'm surprised we haven't seen the sequels made into movies.

RE: Quarry on Cinemax
I am still ambivalent about this series. Just watched another episode. Too much showing "meaningful shots" of a hose draining an empty swimming pool at a cheap motel, then sitting around at the bottom of said pool and talking. The "hero" is a dubious character who has not caught my interest much. I have watched until now expecting it to get better, but if this is all they've got, count me out.
Oh, yeah, the shots of this hero tearing into a motor from said swimming pool in his motel room as if he could fix it were pretty stupid. As a guy who spent much of his career as a rotating equipment engineer, that ain't happening short of a good motor shop.
