Don't be so sure about STF. Who was it exactly that extended Carey's contract? Wasn't it our associate VP & AD?

At the time it seemed like Carey picked up where Doeren left off. We had just won the MAC etc and many assumed Carey would be hired away soon after. It was just as much a business decision so whoever hired him would have to pay us whatever was left on the contract. It looks bad now but didn't seem as bad back then.
Hmmm. Not so sure about that. What was the need to extend him at the time???? Again, he was hired as an O coordinator with, I believe, no head coach experience. No top level experience at all. And in a matter of months he is handed the head coach job before an Orange Bowl. That's fine as an emergency measure, but then no evaluation as to who are head coach should be? That was a HUGE mistake. Then giving him an "extension" -- why?????? His contract should have had a buy out. Every NIU Athletics contract should. So, the excuse that you had to extend him to get a buy out is ludicrous. So, yeah. It was a mistake at the time. Not in because of 20/20 hindsight, but at the time based on those facts.

we give Rod the reins after coaching one bowl game and most of you cry foul. instead you'd give Tuke the reins, he only coached one bowl game and won.

I said it didn't seem as bad of a decision, not saying I agreed with it. Being unbiased so if some team would have hired Carey it would have been a good decision. I'm pretty sure that's a common practice is college coaching but I'm not sure if we've done it aside from Montgomery's extension. We did get nice payouts when Doeren and Kill left. As far as my opinion, I didn't like the hire when it happened. I thought he should have been the bowl game intermin and that's in. I remember thinking of the short list of available coaching candidates at the time and drooling. We missed out on some really good coaches.

ESPN will probably produce a 30/30 episode someday on the fall of a dominant mid-major. From the lofty heights of a BCS bowl game to becoming the dregs of the MAC in less than five years, all because of the hasty hire of an inexperienced, unqualified hillbilly coach.

And the effects of maintaining the status quo will only snowball. Let's see how STF responds when attendance drops lower than it already is and season ticket holders and HAF donations start to decline.

Before each home game, STF addresses the fans in the HAF tent with the "keys to the game." If this season progresses as many think it will, how do you think his positive, "rah rah" speeches will be received?

P.S. By the way, speaking of the HAF tent, another superb food spread on Saturday. Kudos to Lukulos! The Lukulos family is there to serve the food, and I heaped well-deserved effusive compliments on them. It has been just wonderful in that tent since Lukulos became caterers after that fiasco last year when the tent ran out of food.

I think the tipping point will be the Toledo game. With every loss the likelihood of that game failing to deliver increases. I don't think Frazier expected NIU to be out of race by October when he moved the Toledo game to Chicago. The football team tanking is not really ideal for marketing that game.
