How close is the Big XII to collapse?
Oct.17

That's the next meeting I believe....if they don't come to a consensus and add Cincinnati and Houston (we know BYU is out now), I think there are dire consequences for this conference...

I'm starting to believe the rumors that Texas & TX company would grab Houston and BYU and try and start an SWC 2.0

What would happen with the GOR?? Would Oklahoma want to stick with the rest of the Big XII and rebuild? Personally I don't think so...I think they would want the conference to dissolve. The faster it dissolves, the faster they can apply to the B1G or SEC. And I believe that's where Oklahoma truly wants to be...

Kansas is a school that could also find a lifeline...maybe with Oklahoma, maybe to the B1G

Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Kansas State, and West Virginia have to be freaking out at the moment....

IF...IF Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Kansas State, and West Virginia could hold on to the Big XII name, they'd at least be able to reload and be good for a very short period of time.

who knows what's going to happen....

Small problem. It would take 8 votes to dissolve.... So those 4 if they stay together are fine. The problem becomes if Oklahoma St goes with Oklahoma, and West Virginia or Kansas St finds a home.

If it happened- lets say West Virginia and Iowa St are "orphaned"- they wouldn't restart a new Big 12(for 1, they would NOT have an auto bid). They would just go to the AAC.

Funny thing about West Virginia and Iowa St -- I think it was Iowa St reaching out to WV about joining Big East when it looked like Big 12 was done in 2010, as to how WV had a connection to get into Big 12 in the first place.

Also have to think a school like WV, which was indy for years, would prefer that to being a G5.

RE: How close is the Big XII to collapse?
Long-term, if the money is ballpark comparable, OU and Texas are best-served being where they are, in a conference where they can throw their weight around politically and have an easier road to a P5 conference title and the subsequent playoff/bowl games. The SEC or B1G is a much tougher road to hoe. That's why this round of expansion has to be about setting themselves up well for a new media rights deal next decade. Texas/Oklahoma will keep their options open just in case, but I don't think they're going anywhere. SWC 2.0 isn't happening either, because it would require creating a new conference from the ground up without the baked-in P5 protections the Big 12 currently has.

I don't really believe this with Oklahoma....I believe Oklahoma could easily enter the SEC as #15. I think that's where they truly want to be as well....

If the Big XII implodes, it's not a problem. If not, I'm sure the SWC 2.0 could get in as an at-large...And when the Playoff is up for renewal, I'm sure the SWC 2.0 would get an auto-bid

RE: How close is the Big XII to collapse?
I don't foresee a collapse, although it seems to be a popular notion. Texas already shopped itself around to the B1G, the Pac and the ACC. No deals. Texas has the LHN under contract until 2031, iirc. Big 12 current TV deal runs through 2025. Texas is better off where they are, and OU has pushed this expansion move, b/c they want to stay, as well.

I think the Big 12 is on the verge of adding 4 teams, which should help with stability, moving it from the smallest P5 to 14, same # as the SEC, ACC and B1G. It currently has a larger total distribution per team ($30.4M) than the ACC or Pac, so I don't see a big issue.

Depends on how you define collapse. If you mean is it close to completely ceasing to exist no it's not. If you mean it's close to losing all of it's valuable properties and looking like a G5 conference then I'd say there's a decent shot it happens once the TV deal expires.

I think what you are talking about is D-E-L-U-S-I-O-N.

Texas would be on the hook for exit fees from the Big XII, and would have to buy their way out of the GoR. They can afford to do that, but Texas tech can't. And Texas would be giving up its status as a party to the CFP. As for BYU, they currently have no real standing with the CFP, so they don't have much to lose. But if you give Houston the choice of being part of a P5 conference that is a party to the CFP contract, or going with Texas in hopes that they will get a seat at the table (maybe as a power conference, maybe not) when the current CFP contract expires years down the road, I'm guessing they choose the Big XII.

Just because Texas thinks it's all that, why would all the other parties to the CFP help them create chaos? And why would anybody want to join them?

Nobody is leaving the Big 12 in the next 6-8 years. Or any other P5 conference.

2 major problems. 1st is football bowl games. 2nd is other sports. They aren't going to the Big East. If they can't get into a P4, they would absolutely have to go AAC just about.

The next 6 years really isn't that far away....

And that's one aspect of this thread....if Cincinnati and Houston aren't added, I don't think ANYONE is satisfied....

And if no one leaves Oct 17 content, that basically means this conference simply can't work together...and I think you'll start seeing schools get restless and start making plans.

How long before Fox and ESPN start looking at who they can grab from this conference?

Would Texas really want an SWC 2.0? Would Oklahoma really want an SEC invite??

Everyone thought the Big East was messy, but this Big XII thing is bringing it to a whole new level

What kind of plans? If you're TCU, Baylor, Iowa State or K-State, what plans are those, exactly?

WVU knows the ACC and the SEC aren't interested. Do their plans include going to the American?

Texas Tech and Oklahoma State can only ride the coattails of their big brothers.

The only plans are made by Texas and OU. After that, the other 8 figure out how to pick up the pieces and continue the conference.

Big 12

North: ou, Osu, ku, ksu, isu, wvu
South: Texas, Texas tech, tcu, Baylor, Houston, x

It doesn't really matter who x is. I would go to an 8 game schedule with a 5-1-2 format. If byu isn't x, I would arrange a schedule deal of 4-6 games per year with them and bowl acces. I would offer Air Force the same deal, they could maybe join the wcc with Seattle or Denver.

And in reality, even if it collapsed (which I don't think it will, just playing along with the thread), if they decided in October to not expand, you are looking at least until 2018 before departures could happen - at that point, it is only a few years left on the GOR.

Texahoma 4 to Pac 12
Kansas + UConn to B1G
TCU to ACC
WVU + KSU to SEC

Iowa State and Baylor left in the cold.

Big 12 will live on. The brand is too strong. Now it might end up like the Big East, MVC, SoCon etc. but it's still up the food chain.
