It was basically everybody but the MAC, Big West, Big 10 and Pac 10. FBS had 105 schools in 1984:
CFA 63
Big 10 10
Pac 10 10
MAC 10
BW 8
Other 4

ACC = 8
Big eight = 8
SEC = 10
swc = 9
WAC = 9 (including AFA)
ND, WVU, psu, pitt, army, navy
that's only 50 schools and the CFA was said to have 63 members at its peak. There are a lot of schools missing. Miami, FSU, Cuse, BC, temple, rutgers, vt, ecu. where is the list of independent members?

RE: Besides Notre Dame what other independents were part of the CFA
I've seen it stated that it was 17 indys and the WAC, SEC, ACC, SEC, & SWC who combine for 44 members. that fits with the notion that the CFA had 61 members and expanded to 63. so who are the 17 indys outside the obvious (cuse, bc, psu, wvu, pitt, nd, miami, army, navy), who were #62 & #63?

I don't know, but here's a list of the 26 D-IA football programs that were independent in 1990:

The way the dynamic shifted in the early 90s forced everyone except Notre Dame into conferences. It's a shame, too because as a fan of a former eastern independent, I preferred football independence to conference membership.

I've never seen a list. But UL, Cincinnati, Tulane, etc. were in.
ULL was not.
This is a quick list of the independents in 1984, but I don't know who the 4 who were not in were.
Boston College
Syracuse
Pittsburg
Virginia Tech
Miami
Penn State
Rutgers
West Virginia
Navy
Army
Notre Dame
Tulsa
Tulane
Cincinnati
Florida State
Air Force
Memphis
Louisville
Southern Mississippi
East Carolina
Temple
Louisiana-Lafayette
Wichita St.

Akron moved up in 87 and Louisiana Tech in 89. Wichita St. dropped fb in 1986.

What is an associate member? You are kept in the loop, but not a full part of the TV contract?

Probably you wouldn't get a cut, unless they actually picked up one of your games?

Exactly....but it helped scheduling to be included in any way....Hell, we actually got the Bama Crimson Tide to visit Cajun Field in 1990
