Former NIU punter
This guy was suppose to be real good, but never actually punted for NIU. Interesting case challenging transfer rule:

So, Carey pulled Deppe's scholarship and sent him packing? Yet another head coaching blunder, considering what we have now.

How do you pull a scholarship of a kid good enough to punt at Iowa considering what NIU has at that spot right now??

Seems like he's a decent student and was very happy/energetic to be a part of the team. Solid move Carey.

RE: Former NIU punter
Ambrose has not improved, if anything he is worse this year than last. I would begin looking for someone on the team or on campus that punted in High School that can kick the ball more than the 10 to 12 yard punts that have occurred this season (twice in one game).

I feel for our kickers because I am not sure that any of our coaches have the ability to help them improve. At times I wonder if they are on their own and have to self develop.

I saw Orne punting in warmups before the SDSU game. With his feet on the goal line the ball was hitting the 45-50 pretty consistently and straightish. That would at least be an improvement if he could do it in a game.

We don't know that he was good enough to punt at Iowa...Iowa may have just had a spot open up (because someone else left) and decided to take a chance on another punter, but they weren't willing to wait on him a year, so who knows...

but yes, we could certainly use help at punter.

My wife doesn't follow football much but I read her the article. She ripped Carey for taking the kid's scholarship. Considering our punting and poor field position she could be right.

Funny. I read the article to my neighbor's dog this morning. Every time I read Carey's name, the dog lifted his hind leg and let something out. By the way, he's a Husky, so I assume he knows something.

I'd be pretty surprised if Iowa is going to give a scholarship to a punter if they aren't sure he can punt. They'd just grab a kid who punted in highschool from the student body or a soccer / rugby player before they did that (which NIU should probably be doing at this point).

It'd be pretty unlikely that NIU can't find a kid better than Ambrose in the student body.. you don't have to be 6'5, 300lbs to be a punter. Plenty of kids out there can do the job. I can't imagine there's a guy on this board who didn't see at least 5 better punters a year when they played in high school.

Time to sit Ambrose and play Orne. No downside to this experiment.

Sounds good to me. I would even settle for them doing another silly free wings contest for the students like do with the field goals during breaks. Except, this would be live action when we need to punt. Pick a kid randomly, stick a helmet on them, and let them punt. If they catch the snap and get 20+ net yards they get free wings for a year. We probably wouldn't mind up with much worse than we've been getting. 02-13-banana
