You are correct, Sir. A Monroe County sheriff was stabbed when he tried to arrest an Ohio Militia officer. That was pretty much the extent of it, IIRC. The sheriff survived. There were also minor scuffles that surely led to bloody noses, etc. No fatalities. And the big loser was Wisconsin who wasn't even involved but chipped in the UP.

I see I missed the earlier post where you cited the above.

So in the grand scheme of things in terms of rating the winners it looks like this.

1. Michigan (we got the beautiful and spacious UP along with all the shorelines of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron that came with the UP.
2. Ohio (they came in a distant second).
3. Wisconsin (It was a conflict that they had no business with and yet they lost a good chunk of land in it).

A more serious question:

How many games do UofM, MSU, WMU, CMU and EMU need to win this weekend for MI D-I FB to continue being the 'epicenter' of college FB?

Michigan did OK but Ohio was the clear winner, scoring Toledo, the Jewel of Lake Erie. Plus, one can actually get to Toledo- I'm not so sure travel to the UP is possible.

0 to 5? I think it will always be the epicenter of college football to those who think it is, those being people in Michigan. I don't really think people in Alabama, Georgia, California, Texas, Nebraska, and everywhere else see it that way. But Michiganders (Michiganites?) I am sure have always felt that way.

In S Fl we acknowledge the fact that the Jacksonville area is more like Georgia than the rest of Florida.

My point is that ONE state has two top 10 FBS powers, several MAC teams (G5) which are undefeated and kicking butt, and two top ten D-II teams (GLIAC, Grand Valley and Ferris State).

Could someone name another state with teams two undefeated P5 teams, two undefeated G5 teams and I think two undefeated D-II teams (or FCS, either is fine by me)?

This is shaping up as a banner year for college FB in Michigan (hasn't always been that way).

I don't understand how getting the armpit of Ohio makes one the clear winner over the one that got the beautiful, scenic and large land area where skiing, sledding and snowmobiling is plentiful. Where shipping using "ocean" vessels is plentiful. At one time to get from the LP to the UP and from the UP to the LP one would use the ferry at the Straights of Mackinac. But in the 1950's the world's largest (now 2nd largest) suspension bridge was built finally connecting the two peninsulas. Economy wise the UP was a huge score for Michigan wise with the vast natural resources available up there. While Ohio had a way to ship by river (the Maumee) to the open waters of Lake Erie, Michigan had access to the easiest ways at the time to ship to and from northwest Indiana, northeast Illinios and all of eastern Wisconsin.

RE: Has the State of Michigan become the epicenter of college FB?
Speaking of the Great Lakes, I have always said they should be called seas because when you stand at the edge of one and you look out across the water you cannot see land on the other side and all 5 Great Lakes can effect the weather. I have seen storms dissipate as they cross the lakes and I have seen small storms become huge storms as they cross the lakes. The moisture from the lakes in the winter time adds to snow storms by creating, what we call today, lake effect snow. The Great Lakes are larger than some other seas in the world:

Lake Superior 31,700 sq mi
Lake Huron 23,012 sq mi
Lake Michigan 22,394 sq mi
Lake Erie 9,940 sq mi
Lake Ontario 7,320 sq mi

Compared to:

Dead Sea 233.6 sq mi

The dead sea is actually the smallest of all the seas.

From, the Top 5 of Anything website here is a fun and interesting fact about our Great Lakes:

Quote:1. The Great Lakes hold an incredible 6 quadrillion gallons of water (by recent estimates) which is about one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water supply and nine-tenths of the U.S. supply. Only the polar ice caps and Lake Baikal in Siberia contain more fresh water.

2. If the Great Lakes were spread evenly across the adjoining 48 states, the newly created "lake" water would be about 9.5 feet deep.

3. The total area of these lakes is more than 94,000 square miles/244,000 square kilometres of water. This is larger than the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire combined. They are sometimes referred to as "inland seas".

4. Lake Superior is called "superior" not because it's the largest Great Lake but because it is higher upstream than the others. Lake Huron, discovered by the French was called "La Mer Douce" or the "Sweet Sea" (sweet meaning fresh water). On later maps it became known as "Lac des Hurons" which means Lake of the Huron Indians. Lake Erie comes from "Eries", a tribe of Indians. This name is always mentioned by the early French writers as meaning "cat"; Lac du Chat means "Lake of the Cat." Lake Michigan has had many names, among them: "Lake of the Stinking Water", "Lake of the Puants," "Lac des Illinois", "Lac St. Joseph", and also "Lac Dauphin" One indian name for Lake Michigan was "Michi gami." Champlain first called Lake Ontario "Lake St. Louis". In 1660, Franciscus Creuxius a map maker, gave it the name Lacus Ontarius. Ontara in Iroquois means "lake," and Ontario, "beautiful lake."

5. The Great Lakes have a total of 17,549 kms of coastline (including connecting channels, mainland and islands). The Great Lakes shoreline is equal to almost 44 percent of the circumference of the earth.

RE: Has the State of Michigan become the epicenter of college FB?
Interesting thread!!!

I thought it would evolve into a self-congratulatory thread for WMU and CMU and yes, congrats to EMU, on two wins (which is already 2x last year's total).

Interest in MAC FB within the state of Michigan is as high as I can remember over the last 1/4 century... (I can't remember MI MAC teams having defeated two B1G teams and a top 25 team before fall even began).

I think the MAC is very fortunate to have scheduled WMU @ CMU for Oct 1. when the weather is still good and excitement is very high (neither team has lost as of 9/21).

Nothing wrong with the MAC having a Saturday evening game with HOPEFULLY two undefeated rival teams playing before a full stadium and a national sports network (CBSSN).

03-lmfao Have you actually stepped back and looked at Toledo lately? The two newest structures is the bridge over the Maumee on I-280 and a casino that I haven't seen yet. All the rest of the city resembles a lot of the run down scarred areas of Detroit. Getting TOLEDO isn't a win. Now let's say they got something like Ashtabula or Conneaut in that border war, then yes, I would say they got something, but since Ashtabula and Conneaut were already apart of Ohio and nowhere near the border war, Ohio got screwed. 03-wink

Dan, is late to the party. Lol. This thread is already 24 hours old. 02-13-banana

Seriously, this reminds me a bit of MBB 1998 when UofM, MSU, EMU, WMU and UDM all went dancing...

EMU played MSU in the opening round. I believe WMU won their opening round game.

The MI schools making the NCAAs was a big story in the Detroit newspapers.

I'm speaking as of THIS WEEK.

I do realize that in other years other states were most dominant.
