There are some incredible jumps for one year. Out of state enrollment is up 13.7%!! And international enrollment is up at least 18.6 %!! It makes me wonder if we had many of either last year.

Still, this shows that UAB is taking off again!

We were steadily growing until 2014. Then enrollment dropped in 2015. Now, we have a record enrollment in 2016. I wonder what could have caused this resurgence.

Those are huge numbers. No doubt football played a big role in that. 1,202 new students=$60M economic impact on Birmingham.

On the undergrad side, there's 858 additional students paying athletic fees and the football, bowling, & rifle support fees. Each new student helps the athletic department's bottom line. Not to mention more bodies for attendance.

"Barnes’ team is on the front lines of interaction with potential students. Prospects, he says, are choosing UAB for many reasons, including unique programs, new state-of-the-art facilities, world-renowned faculty, unprecedented excitement in Athletics, undergraduate research opportunities other schools cannot offer, and economic value, among others."

There was much concern in 2014-2015 that the attack on the UAB athletic program was only one aspect of the BOT's overall strategy to subordinate the UAB nonmedical grad and undergrad programs to the will of the "Crimson Campus". The resurrection of the football program so quickly put much of this concern to rest. Add to that the BOT's willingness to allow new football facility building, and a more positive picture develops.

UAB has the potential to develop a campus population more like USF and UCF if the state can find funding for public education to match other state's spending. If not, Alabama's universities will become more and more dependent on students from better funded schools in other states and even foreign nations to fill its annual enrollment. It presently is >60% and growing now. Right now, this state's political leadership is like the "Life Lock" TV commercial "monitors"who can detect a problem (assign "F" to schools) but can't (won't ?) do anything to rectify the problem.

Some tidbits from the BBJ article:

"I think the numbers were a bit higher than even our best-case scenario," Bradley Barnes, VP of Enrollment Management said Tuesday. "We’ve planted some seeds for next fall, significantly in regards to out of state enrollment."

UAB has hired four out-of-state recruiters in California, Texas, Georgia and Tennessee, in addition to partnering with international recruiting firm INTO.

UAB plans to implement a freshman residency program in fall 2017, requiring all incoming freshmen to live on campus their first year of college. Barnes said exemptions will be made for commuters coming from several surrounding counties, but administrators believe students will benefit from more direct involvement on campus.

Forcing out-of-staters and long distance in-staters to live on campus will only increase student involvement on campus. We'll definitely need that extra dorm built.

Whenever I try to recruit some of my younger brother's friends to UAB, I always like to mention that Female to Male ratio.

Those states that hooverblazer mentioned, are the same ones that UAT currently hits to increase it's OOS enrollment to get that states students who miss out on their in state colleges. Will we be in the same boat as them in a few yrs of being accused on not serving the state they're supposedly serving?

He's using the same strategy that Tuscaloosa used because his last position was in Tuscaloosa. Having a football program that is churning out national championships doesn't hurt.

This from our Pike County friends:
Quote:Currently, our Troy campus consists of 7,864 enrolled students, but Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr. stated that our university will hopefully have reached 10,000 students in enrollment in a matter of approximately five to seven years. That is the goal of Troy’s recent project, “Road to 10,000.”

Troy actually may have a larger enrollment worldwide than UA when you count all of their campuses.

I invited them and UAB sent their international recruiter to visit our school in Lima, Peru :)
