Nostalgic piece on UNM-NMSU rivalry and NMSU's prospects going forward.

NMSU's future schedules are:
2017 UTEP, at ASU, UNM, Arkansas
2018 at Minnesota
2020 at Minnesota
2021 at SDSU

http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa/sun-belt...aggies.php

They've got to be the biggest fans of the Big 12 expanding, even more than the candidates.

I can't believe they don't have a series with UMass set up or any of the other independents.

1 thing to remember for 2017 they are still in the Belt. They don't leave the belt until '18.

The article is about them possibly losing the UNM series.

I hope that NMSU lands on their feet somewhere; hopefully the Sun Belt or CUSA.

Our schedule is full were we only need a FCS game to complete 2018. We have 7 games for 2019, but it is our hope to find a conference by then. Surprisingly, we have not had an issue with scheduling since Ryan Bamford became our AD.

Not by UNM refusing to play. If NMSU remains FBS, they'll play UNM yearly.

If they drop to FCS. But pressure will ensure that the series continues if NMSU stays FBS.

That's the implication of the article. Dropping to FCS could threaten the series.

Right, but what the one poster was inferring was that NMSU couldn't count on the New Mexico series in helping remain at the FBS level.

NM St is another school hurt by the combination of circumstance and geography. Can't get in the MWC with current make up. Probably have no chance at getting in the CUSA, even if UTEP is in there (or perhaps especially if UTEP is there). And if UTEP leaves the CUSA, then probably no reason they'd take NM St.

I just hope that if the end comes for FBS football in Las Cruces, they don't take the coward's way out by dropping down to the Big Sky. End football and focus on bball.

NMSU not showing any progress on their schedule is probably not good news for their FBS independence hopes...
I think there report showing FBS independence was cheaper than FCS was wishful thinking at best and most likely had number fudging to show the desired outcome...

When NMSU and Idaho were independant several years ago I think they pulled favors and had schools that tried to help them and that is not happening this time...
There are few schools who dont have a full schedule and they are not willing to change there contracts...
The NMSU logo on the side of their helmet does not sell tickets at oposing schools so they are probably having a hard time scheduling home and homes...
If you cant schedule home and homes you have to pay for a school to come and NMSU does not have the money for that...

I dont know about cowards way out as if they want to drop down...
FBS is almost telling them to drop down or drop out...
Just as they are in no mans land for FBS they are also there for FCS but the Big Sky is probably crazy enough to take them and have a conference footprint that spans half the US not to mention NMSU would probably monopolize the bball tourney bid which has more value than FCS itself...

But I think you are right and dropping football would be best for the U...

It is too bad that NMSU is being kicked out of the Sun Belt. I get that Idaho was just too far, and only one football affiliate isn't viable. Sad that those that have the power in the FBS world can shut out members to get them out of the game. Too bad there aren't more options. Maybe if Wichita State adds football, those two can grab a temporary home back in the Sun Belt. I would also think NMSU and Army would get something going on the schedule.

There are 100s of schools that got locked out because of a few powerful schools in the P5. Now, some of them want them back in, but are stuck at D3 without making a stop at D2, and no D2 conference will invite any D3 schools who would only stick around for 8 years to go D1. I could see some high academic schools in D2 get a call up for D1 like Colorado Mines, Missouri S&T, West Texas A&M and some others.

Only if they sign a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1.

Honestly, we have better options for games. Football isn't charity.

You would think they would want NMSU basketball rather than Coastal Carolina.

except for the fact that NMSU basketball hasn't won a game in the tournament since 92-93 season. So it's not like how NMSU was back 25+ years ago. Folks want to make them out that they're something special, but they just aren't. They aren't. The gap between them and Coastal is no where near big enough to override the huge gulf in terms of location.
