Everytime I watch Louisville play
I feel a little sick to my stomach and wonder... what if?

What if we had made the same forward thinking investments they did?

What if we had hired a President like Dr Rudd who values college athletics as the front door of the university, as opposed to a stick in the mud like Shirley Raines?

What if we had hired an AD the caliber of Tom Jurich or Tom Bowen back 20 years ago?

What if we had made a run at a quality football coach?

It all starts with vision and leadership, and while we have it in place now... boy wouldn't it have been nice to leaders with vision back in the mid 90's.

Gotta hire the right coach

Maybe we did with Dockery?

We will never know

Great question to which we'll never know. But, he certainly had the program headed in the right direction.

It all starts with vision and leadership, and while we have it in place now... boy wouldn't it have been nice to leaders with vision back in the mid 90's.

I too remember the days when Memphis would schedule Louisville as one of its filler guaranteed win games. When Louisville coach Lee Corso was waving the white flag with Memphis up 69-0. But, Louisville really gained momentum with the Louisville AD, Tom Jurich. But even before, UK didn't prevent Louisville from having its own med school & that helped Louisville gain academic credibility. Then the OCS & other substantial facilities investments.

And all the while our university has thought small, capitulated to short-sighted state & city interests & we continue to fret & wallow in mediocrity. Even now with all the improvements (and they are major for our university), we are still thinking small. And the city & state continue to miss that that a strong University of Memphis is directly beneficial to city, state & region. Our university should have ownership of the UT-Med School @ Memphis, we should have an OCS & OCA - and it would directly benefit the university (obviously) but more importantly the city (property tax base for surrounding private investment & tourism) & the state. And grow the region. Ironically, a strong P-5 University of Memphis with a strong research endowment would over time be more economically beneficial to the states of MS & AR respectively than OM & UA, in addition to the strength it would bring west TN.

NO vision & short-sighted politicians who look to personal gain & control rather than an independent, strong & prosperous University of Memphis to fuel the economy of the region.

We can agree to disagree on Tom Bowen being the caliber of Tom Jurich part. I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but he's made all sorts of PR blunders since he's been here. Bball is a sinking ship and the fate of the football program under his watch still remains to be seen. I recall Jurich elevating the football program without torching bball.

And let's discuss where football is in 3-4 years under Norvell.

Brad Martin makes the hires along with help from a committee

I wonder if Jurich ever publicly corrected Pitino about who L'ville will and won't schedule. Or if he told a reporter that he was "taking arrows" over something that wasn't his fault. Or if the L'ville president opened a pubic investigation into a multi-million dollar contract that Jurich was a major part of executing in one way or another.

I can go on...

Did you see that they're having another stadium expansion? Looks sick. It's already a gorgeous stadium but with this new expansion, it'll make them big boy. No question. If we had done what we're doing now 20 years ago, we'd probably be in a different situation.

Also, the Big 12 is absolutely retarded for not taking Louisville when they had the chance.

The motivation has to be to build a 40-45k seat on-campus stadium. If we don't, we'll never make enough at the gate to make football profitable.

Yep.

Don't know how long we have known this. Too bad people keep trying to make the LB the go to.

If you want to keep the LB, do one of two things:

1) Chairback the entire m'effer, hopefully that reduces the capacity to the 45k level.

2) Tear out an entire end zone of seats and make it something else. I'm not sure how that could be done...sort of like the right field stuff at Autozone park. Like a picnic area for groups. Or some kids roaming area.

Bottom line is the stadium to just too large. Nothing embarrassing about getting 40k a game.

By my best count, last year 69 D1 schools averaged fewer than 40,000 people a game.
