Hypothetical question
There's obviously quite a bit of discontent with Coach Carey going around here as of late, so I'm wondering: What would NIU's accomplishments have to be from this point forward for you to change your opinion of Carey?

.500 season?
Beating WMU and Toledo?
MACC appearance?
MACC win and bowl game apperance?
MACC win AND bowl win?

I realize the unlikeliness of some of these scenarios, but the team showed grit and fire in the 2nd half against a good SDSU team. If that can somehow be channeled into success that launches us into the MACC again I'd be ecstatic, but I'm not sure if I'd still like Carey.

If NIU gets to the MACC that would change my opinion, it would mean he converted an entire team that has given up on him and also overcame a small talent gap between the Huskies and WMU/Toledo. Like you mention, the chances of that are 0.0001%.

RE: Hypothetical question
Nothing..
It is everything:
0-4 bowl game record (including being outscored 54-159)
1-3 MACC record(and the win was against BG after they lost their starting qb)
1-3 vs CMU
the gradual collapse 12-2, 11-3, 8-6,
the total failure to capitalize on a Orange Bowl birth
recruiting(my main problem)
program direction
his poor attitude(which maybe why he can't recruit).

RE: Hypothetical question
What about

High APR?
High team GPA?
High graduation percentages?
No one gets in trouble?
Entering the program as HS boys and leaving the program as men with a valuable college degree?
Learning leadership, responsibility, confidence, time management, and accountability?

I am not singling anyone out but way too many of our fans forget that the majority of NIU athletes go pro in something other than sports. And that is the goal.

(But must beat Toledo.)

By those factors why dont we just pay a hc 100k to do those things and have grad assistants be the coordinators? Save a lot of money.

Yeah, but when you're paying money to show up and watch the team play, the other goal is to win games. Carey is getting paid a lot of money to also be a good football coach (in addition to accomplishing the other things you mentioned). Having the highest team GPA in the nation wouldn't do much to ebb my depression if NIU goes 2-10 this season.

Agree. The other things mentioned are great, but are hardly noticed unless it's a winning program. An FBS football coach whose team has good academics, but consistently loses on the field, is going to be looking for a new job.

Also, players (and several of them) have gotten in trouble at NIU. As they do at any FBS school.

If this is all about education:
Why is coaching pay insane?
Why are TV contracts insane?
Why do we need a new stadium?
Why do I donate?
Why do they charge to get in?

The rest of us live in the real world where college football is a business. And when I donate money and pay for upgraded seats I don't want to see a high school team on the field
