All last year as I recall. Couldn't put it deep so went high and short so coverage could get there. Don't have a recollection the year before that though.

Ultimately, we're going to want someone that can keep that ball out of a dangerous returner's hands.

Having three different kickers kicking regularly might be part of the problem. Don't quite understand that.

if i had to complain it might be about Woodside's completion % and missing the wide open receiver
obviously hasn't cost us

I watched the replay this afternoon and here's one more thing I don't get. The sideline screens. Even against Fresno they went nowhere. It's like the blocking is never there in time, so by the time the receiver gets the ball he has 2-3 guys he has to try to beat. Maybe we're just practicing the throw in case we happen to get a 1 on 1 matchup? Seems like a waste of a down when there are so many other things we could try.

This is the best I have seen a Toledo team look top to bottom in a long time. The defense is the best it's been since Toledo Tom was assistant coach. I'm more excited about Rocket football than I have been in years.

The defense was the one area I had some concerns about going into the season not because of lack of talent, but because of lack of experience and depth. However, they have looked amazingly good so far this season, but last year by this stage of the season the Rocket defense had been tested by two P5 teams, one of them a ranked SEC team whereas this year the defense has only been tested by opponents who as someone pointed out are only 1-7 this season (1-4 ignoring their losses to Toledo). So far, so good, but I think that the jury is still out and it is a bit too soon to reach a verdict.

tires the defense out by making them run sideline to sideline and chasing plays. also these are usually good for at least a few yards so stays ahead of the chains while forcing the defense to spread out or risk a big play if the offense can block it well.

I saw the screens as more of a threat than a yard-gainer. Forced the D to be aware of it and play a little softer in the middle, knowing Jones could break one of those if you didn't pay attention.

I miss the "screen" where the receiver would run a 3 yrd slant with a bunch of blockers in front of him from the Gradkowski days.
That was always as good as a run play for a sure 3-4 yards and sometimes a huge play.

Also, this is a setup play. Sometimes plays aren't necessarily run to get a lot of yards on that play, but to set up other things. Those stretch passes force the DBs to play close to the line of scrimmage which allows the potential for plays over the top later.

Also, notice that the UT running game does not really include sweeps or end-arounds at all. Those passes are really the equivalent of the end runs in the UT scheme. They prevent the D from crowding the box and stuffing up the middle where most of the UT runs go, because they have to respect the pass to the sideline.

Note that UT ran almost 0 (maybe 1 or 2) of those pass plays total the first 2 weeks, and look at how the running game looked. Against Fresno, they ran 5-6 of those passes, and there was a lot more running room up the middle. There were other reasons the running game looked better this week, but that was a contributor.

How about a MAC Championship flag?
