I believe you should seek help. We were winning the game. I'm not sure why that doesn't disappoint you.

Totally agree Hotrod. Some people just don't know how to recognize talent differentials.

RE: JMU @ UNC In-Game
A lot of good to see from today. No, we don't have a NDSU type of defense that can stop high caliber P5 athletes. But we really have a high powered and diverse offense that should wreak havoc at our level. And though today was a bust defensively, I think against FCS level, we'll be adequate.

I have noticed one thing from the last 3 times we've played UNC. Though they may have not been measurably better (record wise) than other ACC schools over the last 10 years, I've always felt they had a good amount of superior level athletes. In comparison to Duke, UVA, UMD, GT ,State, I see UNC as consistently having better caliber athletes and tremendous team speed. They may not always play that well as a team ( and they do underachieve), but they seem to have some serious skilled players that we are unable to cope with. Every time we've played them, I felt their lines and receivers were leaps and bounds ahead of Maryland or VT's players.

And here's a stat to ponder: In our 3 games with UNC since 2007, their combined starting QB numbers are as follows: 59 completions out of 67 attempts with 8TDs, 2 Ints and 927 yards. Two of those QBs had NEVER even started a game before playing us. Think about that. Do you know how hard it is to allow an 88% completion percentage over that many passes?

The lot where we were was rocking and a great time was had by all. The JMU football alums and VL2 stopping by took it to epic proportions.

When is VL2 going to join the coaching staff?

Get over yourself. Our performance today was respectable. The talent level between players is massive and we still gave them a football game. They're the #26 team in the nation and will be ranked going into next week.

No they're not. In receiving votes are 34th and 27th in the 2 major week 3 polls.

RE: JMU @ UNC In-Game
OK, so after calming down a bit and watching the game again, here are some observations...

- Robinson had a game of inches that didn't go his way. On Carolina's first drive, he had a pass breakup on 3rd and 8 and got called for PI which I think was BS. It appeared to me that he timed it perfectly. The angle they showed wasn't the greatest, but if anything, he may have softly had a hand on the receiver's back a millisecond before the ball got there but in no way did he move his position or impede him from making a catch. That was big because our defense could have held them to a field goal which would have been a confidence boost and they ended up scoring a TD. In the 2nd quarter, UNC threw a slant into the end zone and Robinson played it perfectly and had the ball in his hands in the end zone and just couldn't corral it. Could have been an INT and of Course Carolina ended up scoring a TD.

- We had a good opportunity for a stop when Carolina had consecutive penalties and got themselves into a 2nd & 19. For some reason we chose to blitz Taylor Reynolds and they threw a slip screen for 20 yards. Don't understand the thinking there.

- The DBs can't let the ball get over their heads that many times. I know Carolina has some very talented receivers so it's a pick you poison thing but they got beat over the top too much. Thankfully I don't think we'll see a group of receivers like that again.

- Holloway has a chance to be a very good player, just a matter of experience. On Carolina's first TD, he lost contain (and got held a little) but he made a lot of nice plays on the day. I had to laugh because on one pitch he made a tackle 5 yards in the backfield on 1st and 10 and somehow they called it 2nd and 10. The RB was never close to the original LOS so it wasn't forward progress at all. That was unbelievable.

- Raven Greene had a bad day. He was the one who totally bit on the flea flicker. OK, that can happen to anyone. However, when a back gets into the second level, as a safety you have to do a better job of tackling. He has a tendency to just dive at a guy's ankles. I know it's not easy and I know it hurts when a guy has a full head of steam but that's part of the job description. You have to stick your nose in there and square him up. Even if you get run over you have to get the guy on the ground.

- Khalid looked about as good as I've ever seen him, and also props to the offensive line. I wish we could have continued to pound them in the run game but they put up some quick scores so we had to try to play catch up. Really unfortunate because we won the LOS on offense not only in the run game but in the passing game also. I know UNC had a couple guys out on the DL but still you normally don't see an FCS line handle an FBS DL like that.

- Schor played pretty well but I think as we all know, he doesn't even really attempt a deep ball. That is going to be a problem. We need to at least take a shot here and there even if it's incomplete. Teams are going to start stacking the box and taking away our bread and butter unless we can show we can hurt them if they do that. But, in the short/intermediate game, I thought Shor was accurate and made several nice zip throws. Just worried that he can't step back and **** it over the defense the way Carolina did to us.

- We really missed an opportunity to score at the end of the first half. We were driving the ball down the field and took a couple penalties and got pushed back. That was a dagger. Also, Schor should have gotten rid of that one ball where he took a sack causing us to have a longer FG. Still, 39 yard FGs need to be made. The distance wasn't really an issue, he just kicked it dead straight but from the right hash.

- Overall, I'm just very tired of watching our defense being unable to get any stops. It doesn't seem much different than last year. I knew we'd give up points, but come on, man. Can we get one freaking stop? It has gotten really old. I can only hope we're recruiting some guys to come in and help because this sucks. When you put up 21 in the first quarter you shouldn't get blown out.

- I don't think Gage played at all unless I missed it. I'm not even sure if he was dressed. I don't think it would have made much of a difference honestly.

- Jimmy Moreland continued to play well doing whatever they ask him to do whether it's special teams or playing Nickel or whatever. He did get beat on the long ball but it wasn't bad. He was right there, it was just a perfect throw and catch by Carolina. Not a whole lot more he could do there. He kind of bit on the slant fake but recovered and they just made a great play.

One more thing kind of outside the game. I didn't even know Takeo Spikes was doing commentary. Is this his first year? I thought he was great. It was nice to hear from a guy who actually knows football rather than that fat guy they usually have who doesn't seem to understand that you don't need to scream into a microphone. Spikes actually seemed to know our guys which surprised me. Sometimes it feels like the commentators will just say "#11" with us being an FCS team. I really enjoyed his insight and appreciated the fact that he gave JMU a lot of respect and came into the game prepared.

Gage was dressed, I saw a shot of him on the sidelines talking to one of the coaches just as the game was starting. Do not know why he did not play, injury like last week/ Could have used him yesterday.

I have no idea. Starting to get the impression Hereford has surpassed him. Other than Taylor Reynolds, it seems to me that everyone on our defense should be fighting for their spot. Maybe they just wanted to hold him out if he wasn't 100%. Probably a good question to ask Mike Houston.

Will everyone agree that pass interference is probably the most consistently incorrect penalty call of the entire rule book? In all my years of watching cfb, no penalty call has been so constantly borderline at best in some instances then pass interference. Refs in the backfield are always ready to throw a flag and video evidence be damned, their call is going to stand.

Gage Steele was being held out on purpose. Maybe they dressed him as an emergency. Tweets from Madia said Houston wanted Gage completely healthy for the beginning of CAA play. Don't think he lost his job.

That sounds about right. He played really well in week 1. If anything they may rotate him in/out more often w/ the rise in Halloway's play, but Gage is definitely still starting IMO.

If that wasn't an emergency, I don't know what is. I'm kinda joking. I get it. It's not like he was going to come in and shut down their offense by any means so there was no purpose to not let him recover and get healthy.

I was impressed with our O. Our D, not so much. That borderline pass interference that kept UNC's first drive alive really changed the complexion. If we get an early stop, who knows what happens.

I think we'll be a tough team to beat, but it sure feels like everyone is playing for second place in FCS again this year. NDSU might be a Top 20 team in the country, regardless of designation.

Yeah, when I saw the NDSU score last night I told my wife they had pretty much already won their 6th NC in a row.

Our 1st string offense will put up 40+ against all but maybe 1 or 2 FCS teams. Our defense didn't look terrible yesterday. You have to remember that UNC has maybe one of the best offenses in the country. Both of their RBs are great, they have some speedy WR's, Switzer was impressive, and their QB is really good also. We were a couple penalties away from getting some big stops during the game. No FCS team is going to have nearly the weapons (especially at QB and WR) that UNC had. If a couple plays break differently and our corners at least turn their heads for a second on those long pass plays then it's a tighter game. It's still early, but UNC will have a chance at finishing in the top 25 if their defense can improve.

This is also only the 3rd game that defense has been any more than an afterthought after two dismal years under Withers. With Gage back and more experience under their belts I think they'll improve from week to week. We have a great year to look forward to (was going to type more, but I'll leave it at that). Our RB's are going to demolish 3/4 of our CAA opponents.

I'm a "homer" but I think JMU can take the Bison on a neutral field. Let's hope Coach Houston can lead us back to the NC game.

Is there any way for Houston to keep Hereford on the field after how well he's played in Steele's absence? He really has played well and you'd hate to keep someone like that on the sideline. I wonder if Houston could slot him at another linebacker position and have him and Steele on the field at the same time.
