Sorry but I don't buy it. Why does someone in Washington state, Wisconsin, or New York give a crap about what happens in the honky-tonk deep south?? I sure don't.

The top 10 in college football garners ratings period

Louisville-Clemson will be huge now, assuming Clemson doesn't stumble on Thursday

Michigan-Penn State will be a game to watch this weekend, despite Penn State looking pretty mediocre this year

Florida/Tennessee joins the list(temporarily) at #10, bumping out the ND/Mich St game.

Saturday will be good....
Georgia/Tennessee and Wisconsin/Michigan in the afternoon
Louisville/Clemson at night

Louisville/Clemson should get a HUGE number. The afternoon numbers will be fascinating to see as well.

Deservedly so. That was a helluva fun game to watch, and I had no rooting interest either way.

I don't see why Louisville/Clemson should get a huge number.

SC is a big college football state, but relatively low population and the state is split. Kentucky I don't think is a big college football state, plus still split anyway.

People really going to spend their Saturday night watching an ACC conf game?? Just tell me the score.

no, he thinks it's 1996, before the BCS. I'll venture a guess that it will be a top 4-5 game, with well over 7 million viewers.

I'm making no claim that a number that big is impossible.

I just don't get how. Hard for me to believe that people care about college football outside their own team's game, especially on a Sat night. Don't you have something better to do??

The thing is, whether you like it or not, college football has become a much more national game. The BCS changed things so much. Made it where fans of Alabama actually cared how Ohio St or Michigan was doing.

Agreed, a lot of quality matchups this weekend. While it won't make this list, I think the Friday night Pac12 game on ESPN will do pretty well

You are joking right??? Remember 5 years ago when a Boise St game was the most watched game of the season? Not Ohio St; BOISE ST.--No us college football fans do not have "something better to do." This is what we do.
Cheers!

RE: Top rated college football games this year
But there have always been hardcore college football fans, who love to watch the game regardless of the teams playing. That hasn't changed.

I refuse to believe your ranks grew by a step change.

So the ratings have to come from three pools: a) fans/alumni of the specific teams in the game, b) "casual" college football fans, c) all other TV viewers who fall outside of a and b groups.

The pot of gold (for TV execs) is always group c, and by far the hardest to attract. Especially, some mid-season ACC conference game like Louisville v Clemson.

Louisville-Clemson overnight rating was 6.0, per sportsmediawatch.com - if that holds up it will have been the 2nd most watched game of the season so far. Wisky-Michigan overnight was 4.5, good enough to crack the top 10 to date.

just looking- Louisville/Clemson would be roughly 9 million, and Wisconsin/Michigan would be roughly 7 million.

updated for last weekend. #2 and #7 games of the year so far...

looking ahead- maybe Miami/FSU can get on the list this weekend. Also A&M/Tennessee. CBS praying Tennessee wins to set up next week with Alabama/Tennessee.

I'm going with A&M/Tenn to win the week. Pretty much no competition in the mid-afternoon slot (just Indiana Ohio St ESPN)

Early slot is split among: Iowa Minnesota ESPN2, LSU Florida ESPN, Notre Dame NC St ABC, Texas Oklahoma FS1 (how is this not on FOX??)

Evening slot is split among: Michigan Rutgers ESPN2, Alabama Arkansas ESPN, FL St Miami ABC, Washginton Oregon FOX

waiting to see the final number- but think the Tennessee/Texas A&M game will get on the list with around 6 million viewers.

would expect the Alabama/Tennessee game this weekend to get a big number.. And Ohio St/Wisconsin as well. By end of this weekend- it's going to take almost 7 million viewers to just get on the list I think.

RE: Top rated college football games this year
Week 7 "big" TV games: (ESPN2 equivalent and higher)

Non-Saturday slots: App St ULL ESPN2 (Wed evening), Duke Louisville ESPN (Fri evening), Miss St BYU ESPN (Fri late)
Sat noon-ish slots: NC St Clemson ABC, Iowa Purdue ESPN2, K St OU ESPN, WVU TX Tech FS1
Sat afternoon slots: Wake FL St ESPN, Nebraska Indiana ABC/ESPN2, UNC Miami ABC/ESPN2, Kansas Baylor FS1, Alabama Tennessee CBS, USC Arizona FOX
Sat evening slots: Ohio St Wisconsin ABC, Stanford Notre Dame NBC, Tulsa Houston ESPN2, Ole Miss Arkansas ESPN
Sat late slots: UCLA Wash St ESPN, Boise St Colo St ESPN2

The OTA networks all have games. Obviously Stanford ND has lost steam. And the FOX game is too regional and too low ranked of teams to have a chance.

You'd think Bama Tenn, but that's also a quite regional matchup and has more competition. I'm going with Ohio St Wisc for the win! 04-cheers

RE: Top rated college football games this year
As an aside, if FOX really wanted to get CBS "SEC game of the week" type ratings for one CFB game, it really should have bid on a "Big Ten game of the week".

I really think CBS does a great job getting the best SEC game, with a "NFL quality" production, out to the masses.

That can be expected.

Two dynamic offenses, with exceptional quarterbacks, battling defenses with Sunday talent stacked through-out.

Vs... Non Ohio State - Big Ten football.

Honestly I'm surprised it wasn't worse.

In hindsight these posts are very entertaining.
