For the 6th year in a row, LA Tech is rated a Tier One National University by U.S. News and World Report. Congrats to the LA Tech leadership that makes this happen.

I don't think that's actually a rating.... I know UH likes to brand themselves as Tier 1 but how does the #194th ranked school qualify as that? The reference is usually to the Carnegie research activity level as the "highest level of research" which doesn't really have anything to do with undergraduate education.

There used to be four tiers, now there are two. Ranked and not-ranked. Therefore if you are ranked you can spin it somewhat legitimately to say you're Tier 1.

USNWR is a Ranking or Rating. The Carnegie specifically states their classification is not a rating or ranking

National/Regional is how they divide up the schools and it's based on the Carnegie Institute basic categories, this is not a qualitative or quantitative judgement it's just a way to break universities into comparable buckets. Once they are divided they then Rank them. If you are ranked you're Tier 1 (in that category), if you are Rank Not Published you are Tier 2.

http://www.usnews.com/education/best-col...gs-faq#9-2

Quote:U.S. News publishes the numerical ranks of approximately the top 75 percent of schools in each of the categories. The remaining schools are placed in the bottom, or second, tier based on their overall score in their category. Schools in the second tier are labeled as Rank Not Published and listed alphabetically on usnews.com.

The second tier, also referred to as Tier Two, is approximately the bottom 25 percent of schools in a given category. In other words, schools listed in Tier Two are ranked lower than all those that are numerically ranked.

U.S. News believes that the data are complete enough to numerically rank schools in the top 75 percent of each category, given the robust methodology.

Another key reason U.S. News can rank that many schools numerically is that the quality of the data collected has improved over the years, in part because of U.S. News' ability to get data from other public sources, such as the U.S. Department of Education, for schools that don't report their data voluntarily.

These extended rankings also reduce ranking volatility, since schools are less likely to drop in and out of the numerical rankings from year to year.

The numerical ranks for schools in Tier Two are not published since the data is not as complete and U.S. News wants the numerical rankings to emphasize the top schools. U.S. News has calculated numerical ranks for schools listed as Rank Not Published and will give that information to the schools if they request it.

In fairness to Marshall and Western, I think they both are in the top 50 of Regional Universities-South by U.S. News, and truth is if you aren't involved in some kind of Research and don't have a few doctorate or PHD Programs US News kind of ignores you. By the way those of us shown as NR are actually listed as Rating Not Published (RNP) and what in the #$%@ does that mean?

Means you're in the national category and they don't take time to rank below a certain number. Usually 200 unless there are a bunch of ties. You can pretty much tell where you'd be by looking at SAT scores, alumni giving, freshman retention and graduation rates and comparing them to the bottom ranked schools and schools you think are peers.

The link above says the top 75% or so are numerically ranked.

I see we've held on to our prestigious NR ranking again this year. Much better than those diploma mills that aren't even listed.
