Anyone who can't concede that Army has a good team is in complete denial and isn't capable of an objective analysis. They'll probably win eight games this season, including beating Navy. The problem I'm having is that we aren't improving. We look the same every year while others pass us by. Our recruiting is terrible. Coaching is only one of many problems within the program. Big moves need to be made or nothing will change for us. But lets give credit to Army. They looked great today. They executed and didn't make any mistakes. They're faster than they've ever been before. They beat us like a drum and they'll do the same thing to UTEP next week in El Paso.

Army is an improved team and certainly decent, but I would not call them "very good". They're probably on par with where we were in 2014, and I would not have called us "very good" back then (which was reflected in our high 80s/low 90s ranking...out of 128 FBS teams). WKU and USM would likely blow Army off the field. Other teams have improved, but we've gotten worse over the past 2 years. And we're not playing with any fire and aggressiveness, and in football, that's a recipe for disaster. And, yes, that's on the coaching more than it's on the players.

Two years ago we beat Army by 20 at West Point. Last year we beat them by 7 in Houston. Yesterday we lost by 17 at West Point.
Anybody see a trend line there?
They're getting better. We're not. We need to get better. Now.

RE: Bailiff 2.1 ?
I think the one thing in the current situation that is the absolute worst is my complete lack of confidence in our current FB situation. After Fred's first year and almost to the end of Ken's years, I felt that we, even though we might not win, could compete with even with the best teams in ALL of the NCAA. Now, I am not sure I have any confidence that we can compete with anyone, much less the best in our embarassing conference. The only time in my 50+ years of supporting Rice that I can remember that is during the Polk basketball years and the last two Braun years (only Rice would have extended Polk and allowed Braun to coach after the 5-26 season).
And the constant coverage and noise from those red people just makes it worse. Got my new Sports Illustrated and was enthused to see DeAndre Hopkins on the cover, I flipped to the inside and there was an indepth article on their victory over OU. I almost lost my lunch.
How in the world our BOT and Leebron has allowed all of this to happen is an abomination.
I have been dreading this season from the end of last year and nothing all summer or these two games has made it any better. Not sure how I can drag myself to the home games. I have watched short snippets of the first two games and have to turn it off.
Anybody ready for basketball?

I agree with this point. All the 'three-bowls-in-a-row, first-conference-championship-since-1957(ahem...1994)' talk from Bailiff and Co. can't conceal the fact that his teams can't stay on the field with Top 75 competition. The Rice teams of the 1990s mostly held their own against the best competition.
Someone recently posted video highlights of the 1991 season. Rice only went 4-7 that season, but Rice was able to be competitive with every team on a much tougher schedule. These days, we can effectively rule out Rice even coming close to a Top 75 team, which is simply unacceptable. Other G5 teams manage to compete with the best...

Did it work out, i.e., pin Tech inside the 5?
Just curious.

Kicked into the endzone. Gained 10 yards.
Just curious.

I remember the Tech game - when they see the score most people will assume that the game was played in a driving rain storm. As I recall the weather was clear and sunny - the 3-0 score was the result of some of the most boring football I've ever been forced to endure. And just to show how different things are today, that was the only time that a Rice home game was on TV in my 5+ football seasons at Rice. And the only reason that game was on TV was that there was a SWC rule that every team had to be on TV at least once every three years.
And no, I don't miss Bo Hagan either.
