From what I understand, the only way in & out of the house was blocked by the fire/smoke, and there were bars on all of the windows, so no one could escape that way. Just horrifying.

A man on the news said his sister called in the fire but couldn't escape herself due to a AC unit blocking the window.

According to WHBQ-TV's Kristin Leigh, there were two doors, both at the front (maybe a consolidated duplex?). So I guess no side or back doors and bars on the windows. The fire is said to have started in the living room.

Reading the updates CA article, the smoke detector worked and the fire was only in 25% of the house. Smoke inhalation killed most of the family. The fire happened at 1AM so sadly I wonder how many on the house never really had a chance to escape because they were sleeping when they succumbed to smoke inhalation.
