The Fact of the Matter
This team is and has been headed in the wrong direction under Carey. Since the Orange Bowl it has slightly but steadily declined to what we are seeing today. They need to remove Carey sooner rather than later so new recruits will know the situation now, not at the end of the season. This coach does not have the leadership style that NIU needs. Time to realize this is a lost cause, Carey was not the best person for the job and move on. The longer he stays the more damage to the program that will be done.

RE: The Fact of the Matter
People need to let Sean Frazier know their discontent with the direction of the program -- Email him, call him, talk to him in person during the NIU alumni association tailgates.

RE: The Fact of the Matter
Looks like this is our year to fall off the cliff, which many programs do after losing their hot QB. CMU did, UCF went 0-12 last year after losing Bortles, and even Florida lost a game to a FCS school after losing Tebow.

That being said, it's up to the the coach and AD to correct things before a program falls into obscurity . I hope NIU won't be a one hit wonder. It looks like CMU , Toledo, and Western will be duking it out, wih NIU, Ball State, and EMU fighting to stay out of the bottom.
It's sad, but we're not the first team to go through it and won't be the last.
I was at the game, and our guys seemed like zombies. They looked like they HAD to be there, but didn't want to. That starts at the top, and is on Carey, no doubt. USF is good, but we embarrassed ourselves, yet again.

It was great meeting some of you at the tailgate, and thanks for the beers. They were much needed later.

The alumni event was better than I thought it would be. Good turnout, nice venue, and Michael Turner did a nice job speaking with the group.

As for the game, what can be said.

I feel bad for Hare, seems like a nice kid who has some bad luck with injuries.

When was the last time Toledo was fighting to stay out of the bottom?

When was the last time Toledo was fighting to stay out of the bottom?

2008, 3-9 overall, 2 and 6 in the MAC . I believe we were 2-10 the year before.

2009, CMU 11-2 overall, 8-0 in MAC play. 2010, 3-9 overall, 2-6 in MAC.

We're just so used to winning we can't remember being in the losing column. We went to the Orange Bowl, and now we're scraping bottom.

A bitter pill to swallow, and something needs to be done.

There's plenty of talent on this team. It's obviously not being tapped. Make personnel changes on defense and offensive line, make some changes in offensive philosophy, make some calculated gambles during the game. It's time to let it all hang. We need to change our mind set. I'm sick of the same old sh*t. Breathe some life into this season. Put Maddie in for some wildcat, make Wimann and Turner a prominent part of your gameplan, throw in some trick play. Make our offense fast, fun, and exciting. If our offensive line sucks, throw quick passes to set up the run. Why hasn't this been done already. Better see something creative next week because this really sucks.

The fine line is, these changes need to be done in a manner that exudes leadership and accountability - not in a manner consistent with punishment, fear and blame. I fear, this administration has gone on for too long in the latter manner to accomplish this task in a positive way

I want to remain positive but, have followed administrations predicated on blame/fear/punishment. Overcoming this is no small task.

Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is quite concerning.

One question....how does a MAC school improve upon an Orange Bowl appearance? The "steady decline" was inevitable; and it was more gradual than steady. In 2013, we avenged our only regular season loss from the Orange Bowl season with a victory over Iowa; and we almost did the unthinkable by returning to a major bowl. In 2014 we beat 2 more Big 10 teams and win a MAC championship. Last year we battled OSU before losing, and still managed to return to the MAC Championship. Things have not been great recently, but geez...this program has been on quite an extended run. Go Huskies!

Lets pray for 7 wins and a bowl game. Lets get fresh blood at the helm ASAP and keep building what most people around the country still perceive as an elite G5 program.

STF is part of the problem by extending him because he couldn't see that he was winning with other people's recruit and talent and wasn't refreshing the cupboard.

At least we dont have to worry about him leaving to a big program...

You'll never see anything creative from Carey. We're down 24 points and was still a 2 runs, an incomplete (short) pass, and a punt.

Do you think Don Shula, Tom Landry, Nick Saban, Bear Bryant won popularity contests with their players? Lou Holtz? They got the job done. Every team has obstacles to overcome. The players want to win and the coaches want to win. They should focus on that. If the players have an issue with the coach, they should have taken it to the AD and made him handle it. If the AD didn't handle it, they should've gone to the president then the press. There are injustices in this world and the players should have trusted the leadership, their talent and integrity. If they're not performing to their utmost ability, they're cheating themselves, their families, the university, alumni, and their fans. That's also unacceptable.

I don't think there is one example in history where a team stopped playing for a coach and then all of a sudden did so again. These situations only resolve themselves by blowing things up.

The hyperbole is all great - I can't believe you forgot the Gipper. Classic man-up accountability stuff, which isn't wrong but, is far from right, in this circumstance.

True Leadership is more complicated

My point was, even if he IS the right guy, it's going to be an uphill battle, as I fear he's laid a culture, he himself, has to overcome.

If he recognizes his ineffectivity, what's his plan to overcome it?

For starters, I doubt he's even recognized his ineffectivity, "it's the players fault because they didn't execute"....

If he hasn't recognized his ineffectivity, he has no plan to overcome that ineffectivity and, is likely destined to repeat the same mistakes.

I'm afraid we're in for a long (3-5 win) season.

If you fired him don't you think other coaches would look at that and say " I lose 5 games in a row, will I be out?" No thanks.
Must wait until after the season to reevaluate.

Its not about the Bowl Game. Its the level of play. It has been in a steady decline. If you are happy with it so be it but I was around in the late 90's and it is beginning to look very similar.
