RE: Week 2 Thread
if we continue to win 1 out of every 3 P5 game I will be happy if we take 2 of these 5 - CMU at Virgina, WMU at Ill, Ohio at Tenn, Kent at Bama, (would include Toledo at BYU in there as BYU is sort of a tweener P5). MAC looks a bit top heavy this year with Toledo, Cmu and WMU all looking strong, Ohio and Ball St looking OK, and a lot of folks struggling. I saw good things by EMU today despite the score. They got 2 big G5 games coming up.

Eastern Illinois can be good -- we'll see how they fare. They better be good, considering they won (beat Miami).

But the others? No excuses. Kent State played Penn State toe to toe for a 1st half, seemed to be on an improving route, then loses it to AT&T. Albany beats Buffalo, and Buffalo just screwed up during that game.

Our conference isn't looking good. There's some sunshine, but too many let-downs.

RE: Week 2 Thread
It might be tough for the MAC to fill all 6 of its bowl slots this season. The only 3 teams that I'm confident to say they will definitely get to 6+ wins are WMU, CMU, and Toledo. I can't see Miami, Kent, or EMU making it to 6 wins. I also feel Buffalo would be highly doubtful.

That leaves BS, NIU, Akron, BG, and OU.

BS- Has a solid chance of getting to 6 wins.
NIU- Kind of needs to beat SDSU this week as starting off 0-3 and playing in West division would leave them little margin for error.
Akron - has Marshall this week who they go into as a 15 point underdog and they play Appalachian State next weekend. If they come out of that 2-2, I like their chances at 6+ wins. No easy task however.
BG - Got taken to the woodshed by OSU then narrowly escaped an FCS team. Maybe they get their season turned around, but they better do it soon.
OU - They are probably the safest pick out of these 5 teams to get to 6+ wins.

Well, right now, ESPN's two bowl projection pundits each has four MAC teams bowling. they both have the obvious choices of UT, CMU, and WMU. one then has OU and the other has BG. let's hope more get added to the projection list as the season rolls along. (just FYI, Ohio was NOT on the list after last week's game so it's a constantly changing thing, obviously. still way too early!)

It has never been "tough" for the MAC to get 5-6 bowl eligible teams and this season is unlikely to be any different. Every conference always separates in their 3 seasonal tiers as the season plays out (top, middle and bottom) as they start to compete within the conference.

The only way to not get enough 6-6 teams is if there are 3 teams with double digit wins and 3 teams with 2 or less losses...which is most likely not even possible by schedule.

Not sure how you read that much into it from the Week 2 point. Beyond the CMU outstanding win and maybe the NIU losses (which you could argue balance out), the season has been a typical MAC start.

I feel they should get to 5, but getting to 6 is iffy. In a typical year does the MAC lose 3x, nearly a 4th, to an FCS opponent? Also, years past had 13 teams, not 12. In the early onset it just looks like the divisions this year are more unbalanced than previous years and the West teams will beat up on one another, meanwhile. the East teams are piling up OOC losses.

Edit:

Currently the MAC East sits at a combined 3-8. Kent State is the only team favored to win this week. If the spread holds, you would be looking at a MAC East that could potentially be a combined 4-13 heading into week 4 of OOC with all 6 teams having a losing record.

Moving unto week 4
Akron - Appalachian State
Army - Buffalo
Kent State - Alabama
Bowling Green - Memphis
Ohio - Gardner-Webb
Miami - Cincinnati
*Buffalo - Boston College (week 5, Buffalo final OOC game)

Only 1 of those games I look at and think the MAC team is clearly favored is (OU vs. Gardner-Webb). A lot of MAC East teams will likely enter conference play with losing records. That's what would prevent teams from getting to 6 wins.

So, you are predicting a "SunBelt" scenario for the MAC this year?

Hmmm....now that you've outlined it, I can actually see how this could happen, especially without UMass to beat up on...

I have to agree...it may be tough to get 6 bowl teams!

I'm not ready to say that it is going to happen. Just saying that it is a very real possibility. The West I feel will produce 4 bowl teams so the East will need to produce 2 IMO. OU I feel is in a good position to get to 6 wins. Akron would be good enough to get 6 wins most years, but they are playing a pretty brutal schedule this season so they will need to pull an upset at some point, meanwhile, avoid losing to teams that they should beat. BG needs to fix whatever is wrong with them quickly. I can't see any of the other East teams getting to 6 wins.
