OT: Dozens of CSU players suspended a game for weird NCAA violation
http://deadspin.com/report-dozens-of-cha...1786418236

Apparently the actual cost of books was less than the allotment given to most of the players by the NCAA, so they were told to use it on other school supplies. NCAA says they were told wrong and were supposed to return the excess funds, and now all of those players are suspended. Doesn't make too much difference in the grand scheme of things since they're playing FSU, but sill feel bad for those kids trying to do the right thing and now they don't get to suit up for a game I'm sure they were all very excited for.

Article contains the screenshot of statements of a couple players. Because they were screenshots, I cannot copy and paste over here but they were speaking very poorly of the school and administration.

RE: OT: Dozens of CSU players suspended a game for weird NCAA violation
CSU continues to have bad luck to start this season. They lose at NDSU, which doesn't really help come playoff time. That immediately puts them on the playoff bubble and probably requires them to win their conference's autobid since the Big South is likely to be a one-bid conference moving forward without CCU.
They have two losses guaranteed now, best case scenario (NDSU and FSU). They play two D2 opponents who supposedly don't count for playoff eligibility. That's 7-2 vs D1 opponents this season IF they win out, which is obviously a big IF when you have CCU and Liberty on your schedule.
Throw in the fact that their HC is suspended one game vs a D2, most of their team seems to be suspended vs FSU over this book store debacle, and their starting QB just suffered a season ending injury in just their second game with their 2nd string QB also suffering some type of injury in that same game (i'm not sure of his status moving forward). Talk about **** luck. It would take a miracle for them to make the playoffs this year. Liberty has all but clinched a playoff berth already assuming they don't choke against lesser opponents.

CSU is evidently a dumpster fire or an Athletic Department.

Daren Stoltzfus got into a pretty big spat a few weeks back with them for pointing out the huge issues in the AD. Former athletes were in full support of Daren.

Really bites for CSU. Seems like their whole season in going down the toilet.

Fiddly stuff like this by the NCAA is what drives people crazy. So the players spent some excess cash at the bookstore for school materials. Big F'in D. Doesn't the NCAA constantly harp on the student-athlete line? And they suspend players for buying school supplies? Was that really necessary?

Does anyone think that if this happened at Ohio State or Alabama or insert your favorite top 25 type program here that the NCAA would have wrapped this up in 2 weeks and suspended 40 players from the squad? Somehow I do not think so. Since CSU is a lower tier program they can put the hammer down on them with no repercussions to their TV ratings and cash flow. We are now, what 2 years, into that major academic scandal at UNC and what has the NCAA done so far? Squat. Deathly afraid of having UNC miss the March Tournament and the impact that would have on ratings. NCAA drives me nuts sometime how they pick and choose what to do and how they do it.

OK rant over.

Brian.

This happens all the time all over the country...Ever wonder how football players have Beats headphones and huge TVs and new sneakers? Football players especially will bunk up and save money on rent so they can use the rest of their living money allotment on whatever they want. Granted, that money might be treated differently than book money but it's the same principle.

What really doesn't make sense about this situation is that CSU compliance specifically told the players to spend the extra money on stuff in the bookstore. So when they do and the school finds out it's an NCAA violation, CSU turns around and throws their players under the bus and suspends them. This whole situation is the CSU compliance office's fault, but it's the players who are being punished. That's what doesn't make any sense. The one office who was supposed to counsel them on situations like this gave them false information. Why are the players punished for that? Those guys have every right to be pissed.

Could be bowl game gifts or pell grant money ( two thousand dollars ). Or their family is well off since their son is on full scholarship.

NCAA didn't suspend them. And from what I've seen claimed, the NCAA rarely does from something like this that is self reported. CSU suspended them. From what CSU posters, and the local paper are saying, the blame lies with CSU overreacting, not the NCAA.

Edit: Here's one article

Some of it is definitely bowl game stuff but some is part of their scholarship allotment. They get a certain amount for living expenses and the less you spend on rent, the more you have for other stuff.
