Oh yeah - "those" schools are part of "traditional academia" - can't limit those schools/majors, give them all the loans they want!!!!

I know that at one time ITT Tech was one of the few "for profit" schools that our administration would accept a degree from as part of a prerequisite for employment. As has been mentioned they had a narrow concentration on their degree paths so we didn't see ITT Tech grads applying for fire service jobs but evidently the people who headed up our Building Services and Information Technology divisions thought enough of ITT Tech to seek out having them included.

For the record the only for profit that we accepted was Kaplan out of Florida. Their fire science program was a quality program and we even used their continuing education programs in our training program. Can't speak to the quality of any of their other programs but their fire related stuff was pretty good.

They have. Everest and Corinthian, Le Cordon bleu, Anthem and several others closed down. Devry, university of Phoenix, Walden and several more are on the list.

Other closers. Briarcliffe, NY., Brooks Institute of Photography, Crown College, Fasttrain, Trump University, AMA college lost their Philippines's campus, and so forth. For profit schools have been shut by the government long before Obama came into office. They were shut by both Democrat and Republican Presidents.

Kaplan sold 38 campuses. Kaplan College is the next on the chopping block to close. Devry also closed several locations themselves.

I don't know about some of those on your list David (I remember when ITT was actually pretty damn useful, although I know it went to hell in a handbasket...)

But I do know that AMA I wouldn't put on the "respectable" for-profit university at all... I read the expose on the AMA college, and holy crap that school was nothing more than a get-rich-scheme by their "board" of the worst sort.

They were asking people to just come in off the street when the college-reviewers were on their campus, and pretend they were students.

I'll give ITT, Devry, and a few others more leeway.. but AMA? Hell no...

RE: Feds effectively shut down ITT Tech.
ITT may have been one of the better for profit degree granting institutions out there, but that's like praising them for being one of the taller midgets. The for profit schools have been scamming the tax payers for many years. If you look at the data combined with enough info about the quality of their services, then it's clear that these types of schools need to go. Bottom line, the vast majority of the money to pay for these degrees comes from student loans/grants from the Feds. The typical tuition rates for these schools is significantly higher than their counterparts who are traditional schools. The quality of their programs in many cases are below the standards of the traditional schools.

Think of these schools as being like payday lenders. Sure, a number of the students benefit; however, because these students tend to be poor, undereducated or even not very smart, they are "forced" to go this route if they want a post high school degree. These for profits have many of these students over a barrel. Sure, you'll get the degree...but it will cost you and you may not be able to utilize it in nearly as many places as if from a more traditional school.
