How is this possible?

Good grief how did that happen?

I'd like to know how too?

RE: A September 2016 Look at the SoCon
While Chattanooga gets a huge (and unexpected) boost from having 6'10" Makinde London eligible, Furman is really hurt early by the indefinite unavailability of SoCon all freshman 6'8" Matt Rafferty. Rafferty had August back surgery and is out indefinitely, although they expect him back by year's end. http://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sp.../91661754/

Without him, Furman struggled and dropped a game by 1 at Presbyterian. No wonder the coaches poll listed them lower than I expected.

By the way, it looks like Jalen Williams isn't yet quite what FUATT expected - 1 rebound and 0 points.

Wow didn't know this.. "Tennessee hadn't lost a home opener since falling 87-79 to East Tennessee State in 1991."

Impressive win by UTC as already noted. ETSU looked great and as advertised. Mercer came out slow, but put away a lower league opponent as expected. Mercer vs. Florida on ESPN U tomorrow, and UTC/UNC will be very interesting!

---------------------------------------

Williams is a physical defender and rebounder. He doesn't have the complete offensive skills of Rafferty. Also, Friday night was his first official game in two years. And that was in high school. He will be a valuable player by conference time. Williams got in very early foul trouble.

Furman really missed Rafferty. He killed Presbyterian last year with 17 points and 10 rebounds. PC played a sagging zone most of the game and Furman had problems getting the ball inside. Acox only got 5 shots all night. Lost the game at the foul line too, only hit 12-20. Furman needs better three point shooting even though they hit 35% Friday, which is actually better than last year's 32%. PC was allowing a lot of wide open shots. Should have hit more.

RE: A September 2016 Look at the SoCon
Chattanooga is keeping it close, but North Carolina is just too much in the post, I think. Tuoyo looks good but needs some help if they want the upset.

Update: UTC down 11 at the half. They hustle, but I think they're simply outmatched. Might be a bit different story if Chuck wasn't out.

Post scriptum: flat out destroyed, no contest. But they are playing a top 10 team with an outcome very similar to ETSU's loss to Nova last year.

P.P.S. 40 point loss, baby. That was fun to watch.

He continues to build that team and refuses to simply accept a down year, despite the breakdown last season. I'm not impressed yet with McCall; no disrespect but anyone with good training can perpetuate the last man's work. If McCall gets it done this year, that's another story, but UTC will have to deal with Mercer and a dynamic ETSU, as we all hope. Speaking of which, when can we expect your analysis of the Bucs?

Not impressed with McCall? He beat us last year three times. Handily. In his first year, against a solid Buc squad. The he swept through the tourney in Asheville. I think he is 2nd in the league behind Forbes as a coach.

No, I'm not overly impressed. He's not a scrub but hasn't really proven anything yet. I want to see a team he recruits and develops on his own. If ETSU had beaten Chattanooga once last year, The Bucs would have been 1st in conference or NCAA bound. McCall was one step ahead od Forbes in virtue of the team he walked into. Major difference in dynamics. After watching UTC get blown out by Indiana and North Carolina is not impressive for the junior/senior roster.

UNC looks awfully good. That said, Chatt looked embarrassingly bad in the last 25 minutes of game time.
I have to say, tho, that I was impressed by London. He is a strong addition to their team, especially in terms of matching up within the conference. Long and lean, and skilled, although he didn't show the potential to dominate a game like Tuoyo has in the past. But that's just one game; it was against UNC; and it was his first (real) game in that uniform.

I have to agree about London and what happened to McLean? 8 attempts and zero points!

Furman broke Conference USA favorite UAB's 26 game home winning streak tonight - 84-74.

All 5 starters were in double figures for Furman. Daniel Fowler lead with his best game as a Paladin 23 pts, 8 rebs, 7 assists.

Both teams were red hot shooting in the first half but only Furman kept it going the whole game - 15-24 from the three point line. UAB only scored 1 basket during a 14 minute stretch to start the second half. They were scoring only from the FT line - 25-31 from the line for the game.

Congrats on a nice road win at UAB. It's a great way to erase the bad taste of a loss to Presbyterian.

The Paladins kind of circled the wagons for this one - relying almost entirely on their starting 5 (Acox, Sibley, Fowler, Beans and Davis). Their bench provided only 11 of 84 points, 5 of 31 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 0 steals.
