so the Notre Dame/Texas game drew 10.945 million viewers....

to put that number in perspective. remember the list that was posted a few months ago with the top 50 sports events so far in the year....

Well, the ND/Texas game would have been #32 on the list. It was better than all but 3 games in the NCAA tourney...
#20 NCAA title game 17.75 m viewers
#28 NCAA SF game 12.94 m viewers (UNC/Syr)
#30 NCAA E8 game 11.56 m viewers (Nova/Kansas)

If you put two big name schools on their own day you are going to see big crowds.

But, not all viewers are alike. Not everybody was watching to hope for one team.

We even had a thread on here questioning how one does it when they hate both teams.

true. But that can be said about a lot of events that are on tv. I mean in college basketball you don't think there's time where folks are watching hoping Duke loses?

I do think we're going to see more and more of these stand alone games in week 1. Next year may be close to one even on a Saturday night- when Alabama and Florida St play.

It doesn't matter if everyone who watched hated one (or both) of the schools. I hope that six million ND haters tuned in.

I would tell them "Thank you for supporting Notre Dame football".

The fact that they tuned in is all that matters to boost the brand of the schools involved in the telecast.

I never said anything to the contrary.

No doubt, ESPN is already trying to move one of next season's bigger week 1 games to Sunday night prime time so they can reap big ratings again.

Looks like the top candidates would be Florida State - Alabama and Florida - Michigan, although both are neutral site games that couldn't be moved to Sunday unless the promoter, as well as the participating teams, agrees to it.

if there is one, it would be Florida/Michigan I feel. The Chick-fil-a game has one as well on Monday night- and don't think they would do that back to back nights. And ESPN would just not have as good of a game on Saturday night next year as they had this year.

Yeah, they won't want to play on back to back days in Atlanta. If ESPN can't get Florida-Michigan, there are other games that could be moved to Sunday, but wouldn't have quite the same TV draw -- e.g. TAMU at UCLA. If ESPN wants a Sunday game badly enough, there are a few good 2017 week 2 games that might be switched to week 1, including Nebraska at Oregon and Oklahoma at Ohio State.

Too bad California doesn't have one team to represent the whole state. So it will be Texas vs. Florida.

Michigan and Ohio State doesn't have the same population like Texas or Florida does. Also a lot of people in the southern states root for Alabama only. So adding all population of these states together, Alabama could rival Texas or Florida.

"Neutered Shame", lol.

That would have been witty for a fourteen year old boy in 1947 to come up with that.

Here's my explanation: Arguably the two biggest brands in college football from different parts of the country on their own night at the start of the season when everyone's hopes are still high?

A recipe for big ratings. 07-coffee3

So you're saying Syracuse basketball > ND football?
(Yes, I know that the comparison between a FF game and the season opener isn't fair, but let me have my fun)

It would have to be week 1. One of the reasons this worked out so well is because there was no NFL.

I would think a week 1 Sunday night game on an OTA network between two major brands from different parts of the country should always work out well, because of that.

If you think yourself a comedian, think again.

Your routine is old and stale and unfunny.

Keep your day job.
