Did you notice that Alabama is not in the lineup? How about Penn State? Tennessee or Florida? USC? Notre Dame? I'm surprised Auburn made it in! There are many schools whose uniforms are so iconic they do not want to mess around with them. Auburn has changed companies and increased the width of the stripe on the pants, worn hideous orange shoes, etc. and that accounts for our 6 million. Changes sell merchandise as nobody wants to really go to the game in dated apparel.

But they also have the brand name for 34 more with no dollar value. Most of the ones without dollar values listed are small schools (only 4 are P5 - Arizona State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Mississippi State).

So all in all, this list isn't complete but it's pretty close.

I question this list because I believe Notre Dame has a much bigger deal with Under Armour than SC does and we are 5th.

It's an imperfect list for sure, but isn't far off. What it tells you is that overall brand recognition is not really skewed more heavily to football than to basketball. There are just as many basketball fans out there. That shouldn't surprise anyone, the NCAA tournament is a massive TV draw, bigger than the bowl games I believe. The reason it is discounted in CR is that the conferences can't sell the rights as the NCAA has monetized the tournament itself. But when looking at overall brand power, don't assume that someone like Boise State has more than UConn or Cincinnati, they definitely do not.

I think that merch sales are a better indicator, but there's obviously probably a very tight cooralation between these numbers and merch sales.

You have to question the database when they have incorrect information.

Since the end of the 2014-15 school year Nike has been the exclusive uniform provider for Clemson. The database still shows Russell Athletic as a uniform supplier when they only supplied baseball uniforms thru the end of the 2014 season.

Clemson is also always going to be behind because we refuse to wear the clown suits that some teams put themselves in just for the almighty dollar. Our uniforms, especially starting this year with the Tiger Paw returning to it's proper location on the shoulders, are essentially the same as they were in the 1970's.

Since the end of the Bowden era Clemson has refused numerous attempts from Nike to put us in "one off" alternate uniforms. The big one was back in 2009 with the Pro Combat deal Nike was running with multiple teams during rivalry week. The initial concept they brought to us was so outlandish and included a change in our helmet so we outright refused. As a result they pulled us from advertising. It was only after they brought forward a much tamer uniform version that did not change our iconic helmet design that we agreed.



Despite the relatively tame design we have never worn those uniforms again. We prefer people when they tune in to know we are playing without having to look at the scoreboard graphic. If it costs us a few jersey sales then so be it.

Well, for those of us who have spent more than a week at a university, the answer is "the value." They must teach this concept after syllabus week, but valuations are very, very difficult.

What's worth more, $9,000,000 cash or $4,500,000 of cash and $4,500,000 of merch?

The answer is the cash even though they both add up to $9,000,000, because the cash is more liquid, and liquidity has value (see banks/finance industry). The next question is how much more is the cash worth? The answer to that is virtually impossible to answer for sure - at least without hindsight.

Therefore, you can know absolutely every detail about two contracts, but still not know which one is better. Is $9,000,000 cash better than $4,500,000 cash and $5,000,000 merch? Maybe, but maybe not.

UCLA, UNC, UConn & Louisville also in the top 20. If anything, this list implies that basketball is more important to branding that football.

Illinois is a traditional basketball power. 5 Final Fours, and they won 4 Big 10 regular season titles from 2001-2005. They've been down in the past decade, but they're still top 20 in attendance even in NIT years. Also they're the biggest draw in a huge basketball-first market (Chicago).
