It HAS been a great run.
For a decade or so, we have had an amazing run. Never before did any of us dream of the things NIU FOOTBALL has accomplished. A lot of that wont go away....you can't take it away. We have become a bit of a national name, relatively speaking. A true football fan knows of us and respects us. College football teams across the landscape have seen us, read about us and/or have been made aware of us for a multitude of reasons....mostly all good.

Again, some of that will remain, regardless.

Truth told, however. Some of this was destined to end.

Whether you're Texas, ND or Michigan...It can't always last. And, it wont. There are valleys. Most every program suffers. The very best get back quickly. Some, never do.

Most of us saw the signs...there were many. Don't need to offer them right now (too numerous to mention, anyhow)...We all knew, even if we didn't allow them to enter our stream of consciousness.

This season looks very daunting, though....a good season is still possible. So is a really bad one. I'll guess that we are ok.

But, our outlook appears to be less positive than this season...For many reasons. Some we control, some we do not.

The magic coach appears or even the magic QB or RB...Who knows?
But, I will enjoy what we have accomplished and allow reality to set in.

I will look forward to our next run. Hope it comes soon. Heck, let loftier things be ahead of us...New conference, stadium upgrades...fans that care (more than just us)...

But, THIS run is over. It ended last season. No drama, no glass half-empty, just reality. Time to work towards the future and enjoy what success we have while we have it.

Time to look at an upper tier P5 OC/DC that can come in and recruit 3* players and keep us relevant.

2017 will be an interesting year to say the least with no more Hare or Golladay.

This. and also we need to move fast to upgrade our crappy stadium to really show we are a premier football program (which I believe we are). But yes, new coach, new facility, that goes a long way.

This is classic NIU fanbase. See CMU loss last year. You guys still went to the MACCG.

Do I think NIU is that great? No, and I didn't last year. But for Christ's sake this game literally means nothing. NIU wasn't getting ranked anyway this year so who cares? MAC play is 3 games away. CMU won the MAC in 2007 and got starched by NDSU. Who gives a ****?

Yeah, we don't really care about the MAC here. We care about winning every time we take the field. Especially against crap opponents. Things are different at NIU as compared to CMU.

Let's give our CMU guy a break. This was his way of calming us.
That said, our responses to him are mostly on point.
This is not last year or two years ago. This is different. We all know it.
Just hoping on one or two steps backward and...
A bunch forward.
That's my present Kool-aid.

We literally stumbled backwards into the MACC last year, then proceeded to get embarrassed and then subsequently blown out in our bowl game finishing 8-6. NIU fans have higher standards than getting embarrassed and blown out.

We do have higher standards and yet ever since the Orange Bowl things have been going down hill. I mean, you can argue all you want that the following season was awesome. However, we got killed in the MACC, then lost a bowl game. Carey was supposed to prepare them for these huge games and did nothing. Now, while other teams in the MAC have been retooling we've losing out on recruits and grabbing some terrible 2* guys. This run was supposed to propel us to a bigger conference and it didn't. This run is over and we are sadly stuck playing against garbage teams/schools like CMU.

I was a supporter of Carey until the Poinsettia Bowl last year and the first game this year. No more. The man has lost the team. Time to go.

CMU fan, please know that most NIU fans are not pompous a-holes like some of them posting on this thread. It is very embarrassing to me that you might think otherwise. I returned from Wyoming after a very disappointing loss but came back having enjoyed my experience with the Wyoming fans. What a great group of people. I want more for our program including moving up to a more prestigious conference but in the process I think we can still be respectful of the conference and schools we compete against today.

Yea...I stand by what I said and how I said it. The MAC sucks. Everyone knows it. You wish we could be in a better conference. Yet no matter how many alumni we have no one cares enough to do anything about it to show up to games, promote the program and make it grow.

All I hoped was that the winning and Orange Bowl would help us recruit better so that maybe somehow we could maintain at least most of the success. It doesn't look like that has happened. But we'll see what happens against USF. I do think Wyoming is better than they've been recently.

And I do appreciate the run we've had, which is one of the best runs a MAC team has had. Never would have guessed that'd happen in 2009.

Yea, but winning the MAC (or even the MAC west) but losing all your OOC games against less than stellar competition tends to make people think, well, the MAC must be really bad.

I for one don't have any care in the world when it comes to the thoughts of the CMU Chippewas' fans. They may love mediocrity, but that sh*t doesn't fly at NIU

It may not be another 10 win season but it's still too early to pack it in. Bad losses happen. Look at San Diego State last year who went 1 - 3 OOC including a home loss to South Alabama. They ended up winning the MWC and blowing out Cincinnati in their bowl game. I want to see how the team responds Saturday before passing judgment or writing off the season.
