Of course. I've heard this a hundred times: "Our Coach is loyal! He will never leave us for another offer! He loves our city/state/community! His kids go to school here! He was born here! He graduated from here!"....and on and on and on. And then with much sadness, and prayer and thought and inner conflict, said coach moves on to a bigger school. Every single time.
Cheers!

Except, it isn't every single time. If it was every single time, Herman would already be gone (twice!) to USCe and UGA.

Petersen spent 8 years at Boise, Patterson spent over a decade at TCU when they were in a non-BCS conference before they moved up, Mendenhall spent over a decade at BYU. Who's to say Herman isn't next?

Just because you can't see ECU holding onto a coach that long, don't try to project those feelings onto us. It's incredibly transparent.

Hahahahaha oh wow. I know UH was pushing it with the tier 1 BS, but your signature can't be serious. "One of the finest institutions in the country"?!?. New level. Nice Drake reference though. I'd add the picture of him in the UH jersey from this weekend.

Yep, one of the finest. The finest, in my humble opinion. 07-coffee3

I'd add the Drake picture too.

It's emblematic of the connection that Houston has managed to foster in mainstream culture that RICE has never imagined possible in their ivory towers of irrelevance.

RICE is CUSA for a reason. Small time thinking. Small time brand.

I know it must have burned your arse to see the production on Saturday, along with the ratings, and along with the rankings.

Simply put, RICE isn't in it to win it... But they want a participation ribbon for academics.

You can have that... with a big CUSA logo on the button, sir. Your insults carry no weight here.

You know Bun B teaches at Rice right? In it to win what? You do realize universities are about education right? I commend UH for their dedication to athletics over the last several years but some of the other garbage that is put out is shocking. Obviously Rice hasn't put near the amount of resources we could (should?) have into athletics over the last 40 years and it shows. I don't deny that.

This is an athletics conference.

If you're not in it with the purpose of succeeding then you shouldn't be in fbs.

Athletics is a doorway for the university. Competition on the field and court is a symbolic extension of a university's mission.

While I respect Rice as an institution of learning, they are simply out of touch. The Rice logo doesn't resonate with the potential applicant pool like it could because they put all their eggs in the academic basket and ignored the greater community that wishes to belong to a more diverse institution that has fun too.

Sports are a great reason to spend Saturdays with friends and colleagues. Not so much fun if you're in perpetual mourning.

I sincerely hope Im completely wrong. Id love to see Herman retire at UH...Unfortunately...The reality is that Beamers and Snyders are few and far between in major college football. 07-coffee3

It's typical crabs in a bucket mentality.

ECU had a coach that was 'all in' on building ECU and they fired him (after a season in which his top QBs were out of commission... and he still managed to beat VT).

I hope you understand the irony of your post in regard to a coach staying long term at any school. It just does not happen very often and not just because of success or failure. It is a business.

BTW...Never heard a coach at ANY school say they were not ALL IN...never.07-coffee3

This man loved ECU more than anyone ever has.

His intention was to stay at ECU until his last coaching day.

Let's not forget, McNeill had the school's first 10-win season in more than 20 years in 2013.

He was no Lebo. He regularly beat the UNCs, VTs, NCSTs... That's huge for ECU.

The potential here in this city is unreal. Herman is a smart man. Plus, Baton Rouge is under water, literally and figuratively.

Real classy. You are really representing your school well.

Is Louisiana not bankrupt? Is Baton Rouge not the capital? Is the state not eroding at an average rate of a football field an hour and the loss of wetlands making flooding much much worse as the state continues to allow development in flood prone areas?

Didn't realize facts were offensive.

No you have no clue. They got 20+ inches of rain in a few days, every southern city would flood. LSU is a top 5, maybe top 3, job (and that does not make me happy to admit). End of story. LSU packs 90K plus every game, UH has never sold half that. LSU straight up dominates the local recruiting, it a great job.

This, plus the fact that even if UH goes to the Big 12, will the conference stay together to continue to be in the elite conferences.

Because you said "every single time", which has already proven to be wrong. If it were every single time, Herman would have already been gone for USCe. Then Georgia. Then Baylor.

Is that the way it works, though? You get to hold the premise open indefinitely, and even if he were to stay a few more years and then eventually leave, you're still going to say that you were right? That's a joke.

Mixed emotions. If the Coogs stay in the AAC I want Herman to stay because he's a great coach. If you leave us for the Big 12? I suppose I won't care as much.

RE: Rumors
UH can & will pay Herman whatever it takes to keep him but there are certain schools where he'd likely go for the same, maybe even less money. And this simply because Herman wants to win a nat'l title. Yes, he can do that at UH given the right circumstances but the path would be much easier at OSU, AL, maybe Texas, maybe LSU (but I doubt it) and a very few others. The problem is the elites intend for an elite to win the nat'l title & if an elite is close to being in the top 4 schools, they will get the node over UH or any other non-elites. That is the decision point for Herman, not money. It's what situation gives Herman the best opportunity to win a nat'l title that will determine if & when he takes another job. If he's a catholic, it might be Notre Dame, otherwise it might be AL after Saban retires. And Saban is likely to consider retirement very seriously if he wins another nat'l title this year or next.

No B12 invite and Herman is gone. Slight chance of staying if he makes the playoff. Otherwise his wife should be researching purple and gold dresses.

That part not looking good. Clemson poised to take Louisville's spot in the top 4, Stanford poised to slip in the top 4 with a loss above them & even WI if they somehow best OSU - and all because the P5 leaders have games against other P5s to keep them in position for the playoffs. The elites want elites in the playoffs & they will vote as required to make it happen. UH could squeeze in with a perfect storm & timing of P5 losses but it's very doubtful. There will be a lot of media hype to give UH a slot but don't think it will. It's rigged, get ready for it.

I like how in your world, every game breaks against us. Clemson/Louisville won't bump us into the top 5 (with all the excitement and pub that would bring to the AAC), rather it poises Clemson to take Louisville's spot in the top 4, as if this week is the deadline.

Just come out and say you're rooting for UH and the AAC to get snubbed.

Absolutely not rooting against UH. IF UH can beat Memphis, I hope you win the nat'l title. That makes Memphis & the AAC winners in $$ & prestige. But I don't drink your koolaid. surely you've seen enough over the years how the elites work things out to have a better grip on reality than to think UH has a legitimate chance to make the playoffs.
