I am not a Carey fan but he is not even close to being as bad as Sadler. Under Sadler the inmates ran the asylum, that will not happen with Carey.

RE: Sky IS falling position
I have not liked Carey since the second year. He is ultimately responsible for the teams performance and the line play and play calling has been bad for 3-4 years now. Talent got this team as far as it did the last few years since he has been in the helm. It is not his leadership!

I cut Hare some slack as he had obvious rust in his game. I think he will get better. He reminded me of his first few starts a few years ago. We should wait 2-3 more games before we pass judgment on Drew.

The Line play is getting worse and worse each of the last 3 years.
I sure hope they figure it out. I don't think Carey has the ability to turn it around. I hope for a 500 season and a bowl game. This could be the end of our run. I hope not.

I will agree I think the penalties were not called fairly on both teams. We were obviously being singled out. Let us hope this changes going forward.

For the record, I watched the entire game here on the west coast. I think it was almost 2am when the game ended. 3 points in overtime is just plain awful!

Nope. Lynch made him look good but since Jordan left Coach Rod has shown himself to be a mediocre coach and a worse recruiter. The real fault, though, lies with administration and the knee-jerk decision to hire him as HC in the first place when Doeren split for greener pastures. An interim head coach for the Orange Bowl? Sure. Naming him as the new head coach right after the regular season? Horrible decision. Getting to the BCS had NIU positioned as the top G5 job available and we would likely have had lots of qualified applicants from whom to choose. When we finally get around to buying out his contract he will have done enough damage to the program to make it difficult to get a top-notch P5 assistant to even want to come to NIU. We're on a downhill slide and he's not the guy to bring us back to respectability. It's no wonder that no one mentions the name Rod Carey when a head coaching position, ANY head coaching position, comes available.

Everything you write is accurate. I will never understand why Carey was hired as the head coach, not the interim head coach. No one will ever know what great successes this program might have had if we would have brought in a dynamic, qualified head coach coming off that Orange Bowl season.

He was given the full time gig because of our upward mobility at AD. The last thing ADs want is a vacancy when they are looking to get a new job

RE: Sky IS falling position
That game was pathetic. I'm not going to say he's a bad recruiter, because he's not, NIU still has better athletes than most P5 schools, but he is a terrible coach at this moment.

O-Line play abysmal. Flat out terrible. The transition to whatever the hell offense that was, very odd. I'm not gonna get too mad about under center even though they didn't do it for like 6 years, because the jet sweep to Kenny worked, but Hare cost them the game going under center in OT with the fumble.

There was no need for half of the PI/D Holding calls. Wyoming had one decent receiver and NIU was way way too physical on the back end. Cost them the game, period.

The biggest head scratchers for me was the lack of uptempo. If they went up tempo they would have scored 40 in regulation. There was also the going for it on 4th down at the 35 with about 5-6 minutes left that made no sense, but it didn't end up affecting them.

Lastly, Wyoming just wanted it more. They definitely didn't have as much offensive talent, Hill was overrated at 4ypc. I saw Wyoming guys having fun, I saw NIU guys acting as if it was a chore. That's on Carey.

You can't fire a guy based on 1 loss, especially a season opener, and I have a pass on BG and Boise because of injuries, but this is a bad trend. NIU could still go 7-5 because the MAC sucks, and if they go 7-5 he will be let go. So NIU could still go bowling and get a new head coach, let it play out. Whether they go 1-11 or anything less than 8 wins, there will be s new head coach in 2017.

Last thing, it's very easy to hire the wrong coach and go way down hill. Carey has kept it afloat, he hasn't sunk the ship nor moved it to the destination. He's just kinda hanging out. Finding the right coach, especially at a mid major is tough. We don't want what has happened at many other institutions to happen here, the could go 1-11 and not be going to bowls. Perspective

But if they go to bowls and keep getting blown out, the team may have fun, but it's an embarrassment for fans and donors - let alone what it does to whatever reputation we have built up.

I personally would rather NIU go to bowls and lose them than to go 3-9 every year. People may not have much of an opinion of good football but they wouldn't be EMU.

Of course this is correct. As a fan and donor, my wife and I do not go to any more post season games because we got tired of the team not showing up and us feeling like crap and wanting to strangle someone after the loss. At home, I can turn off the TV at any time. Saves the old ticker - and it allows me to save a bunch of money, which I donate to the HAF the next year.
