That game was horrific and was sadly typical of almost getting there, them something happened...

We were 35th (tenth amongst the "also receiving votes" teams) in the final 2008 AP poll

By all rights we should have been ranked top 25 by AP in 1994 after becoming one of the top "also receiving votes" teams and THEN beating top 25 UT.
Anyone remember why we weren't?

horrible opening week loss to Tulane?

Yeah, we were 2-2 with a loss to Tulane and no ranked wins. Maybe Almadenmike can find an archive to fact-check that week's poll.

We'd already upset Texas Tech that year . The UT win was the Sunday Night Hurricane Special and most or all of the AP voters had sent in their ballots.
The next Saturday we lost 7-0 at the top 10 Aggies.
Again, by all rights 1-1 against the top 25 in that "week" could have moved us into the top 25, but the voters just "saw" the A&M loss and we never cracked the 25.

UT also had 7 players suspended for that game which might have influenced voters. Even without that fact I don't think 3-2 would get us into the polls. Two of our games were against teams that ended up finishing the season with combined record of 1-20-1.

YEs, I remember the stretch of games. The only part I question is that we were on the cusp of the top 25 after the first four games, going into Texas.

I've looked for a link before. May have to hit the microfiche archives.
You can find AP top 25s back to the start of the poll but not the "also receiving votes" info.
