With the amount of alumni Akron has in the city they should be able to put 35k in the stands without too much difficulty.
That's why Akron has potential as a program, along with being in a great area for high school talent. But unfortunately, it will take more than one year of winning for people to buy in.
It's a process that really should've started in 2010 when InfoCision was brand-spanking new, but has been delayed by a half-decade of coaching (and hiring of coaching) incompetence. If Terry Bowden was hired in 2010 (and he said he would've taken the job if offered then), who knows where this program would be right now.
Also, it looks like Akron has decided not to cook the attendance books this year (something it has gone back and forth with in recent years). The 11,000 (while hardly anything to brag about) was legit. Two years ago, the last time they tried to report actual attendance, it backfired and led to the "lowest attendance in the country" articles ... although in actual butts in the seats, I'm sure they weren't THE lowest.
Last year, through cooking the books, they were mid-tier in reported attendance, while likely being among the lower tier in the MAC in actual butts in the seat.
Maybe this year, they can count actual attendance and not finish last ... baby steps.
