That's being way too bold, IMO. Northwestern was close to a ranking in pre-season polls, and ranked in a few. Yeah, they were overrated last year due to beating Stanford + having an easy B1G schedule. But still, they were no pushover P5 team by any means, just too highly ranked going into their bowl.

I would say "No way does a top caliber MAC team bringing a decent game to the table not at least have a close game against Northwestern."

Yeah. They were not a top caliber MAC team. After the start to this season I wouldnt be surprised if CMU or Toledo also beat NW. And I think that it's true from year to year. 2-4 MAC teams are better than that 5th place and down BIG team.
