first game jitters
I am talking about me, its a crap shoot first game against a quality opponent, other then U of Maine. Anything can happen, UT can't shoot themselves in the foot on stupid penalties, turnovers etc. Play to your strengths and coaching staff play to win, not play to lose by playing conservative on the road. My take!

Maine gave U Conn all they wanted.
We can't overlook them

you are right, can't overlook any team. But, UCONN football hasn't been relevant lately. UT playing at home, 2nd game now coming off a very good victory against a transfer U team in Ark.

UConn was not so bad last year. Won 6 games, including a win over Houston. They lost by only 3 to Mizzou and by 6 to a 10-win Marshall team.
Don't know how good they will turn out to be this year, but I would not expect them to be a bad team.

RE: first game jitters
Maine will be a good test as a second game for both of us. On offense we need to look at ways to keep the ground game productive even when the opponent sells out to stop it--I don't necessarily want to see us throwing the ball every play. There are some things that can be done with blocking schemes and player packages that can blunt that kind of D, and I suspect we'll see the Rockets adjust a bit in that regard if Maine puts 8 or 9 in the box. On D, I don't think Arkansas State tested us that much going deep. For the most part our secondary played well given the ASU game plan (or lack of one), and they were helped by some very good pressure by our D line. If I still see a question mark after game 1, it's the secondary. If they do continue to improve, and if we are quicker than I think we are--and we develop depth--then this Rocket D will be pretty tough to play.

Great start to the year last night...I have to admit I was a bit nervous too after hearing how great stAte is this year with all their bigtime transfers etc. I think they are a good team and would have probably given us a better game later in the year. They seemed to get their mojo going a bit late in the game. Not sure if our starters were all still in there when their 5'5" Wand started carving us up a bit. Tough little player they have there.

Agreed, Maine should be a good test and we need to keep the ground game going this year even when they stack the box, even if it is for 2-3 yards a pop. It will keep the clock moving when we have a decent lead and makes for manageable 3rd downs with a lot of options. I hate it when we pass often on first down...we did that too much last year. Once in awhile is OK to keep them guessing. I did see some new blocking formations with the TE (Roberts) and the FB (Kulon I believe) in the backfield that I don't think I recall seeing last year. Once we get this stuff figured out, things will get even better I think.

Both ASU qbs were highly rated coming into last night's game. I was pleasantly surprised how well the Rockets defense played holding the Red Wolves to under 300 yards total offense. Hard to tell from the broadcast how well the secondary really played but the front seven were bothering Chad Voykic all night long.

Their TD drive came against our 2's & 3's on the D line / lb...although our starters in the secondary were still in...Rodgers took a horrible angle and was caught flat footed on that big pass play...we put the 1's back in on the next drive. Candle pulled them out way too early IMO...the team lets down and thinks it over. Other than that, I thought the coaching and game plan was excellent...really excited about this team.

Thanks for the insight Tampa. Good we were able to get the 2's and 3's some playing time at least. A good learning experience no doubt.

Maine is important but I doubt too many new wrinkles will be revealed. Save for when it matters
