I disagree with the basic premise of your post. The Big XII has not taken these schools hostage. They announced that they are interested in expanding. Schools wanting admission were free to apply. They listened to the presentation of 20+ interested schools. They have eliminated all but 12. They have a process that they are following.

The Big XII doesn't owe these fan bases anything. Nada, zip, zilch. This isn't everybody gets a trophy. This is the real world. The schools owe their fans, not the Big XII. The individual schools have put their fans in this position by choosing to participate in the expansion process. If they truly have no shot, they should have sat it out. The Big XII has a responsibility to each member school and their fan bases, not to the fans of aspiring members.

They announced that they were actively looking to expand to 12 or 14 teams. As far as official announcement's, I am pretty sure that is it.

From a few leaked things and a few things from presidents mouths we've gotten a little more. We've gotten that they were taking first set of presentations from a huge number of schools (seems excessive, but understandable in getting right and extending courtesy to a lot of schools). We've gotten that they have filtered through that first set and now want to interview about 12-13 schools.

I know that if you are a fan of a school in the discussion here, that all this is nerve racking, but if you are in charge of making a decision as big of this for the Big 12, this really isn't excessive. From the time they announced they were looking to expand to an official announcement (assuming they announce by around mid-October) will only be a few months. Given committees, coordination between schools, compromises that must be reached, and that this is only a small part of most the presidents jobs, that time frame is actually not all that long.

Edit: Much of this feels longer for three reasons.
1. We love this stuff and read about it all the time while the presidents don't go through scenarios just for the heck of it. I am sure there was general discussions about expansion, but actually deciding to expand meant looking very closely at all their options and trying to project out years. They can't afford to get this wrong and thus are looking very closely at options.
2. Rumors: How many different rumors have we heard? We buy in to some of them and think of them like official announcements while they only contain some or no truth (maybe one school likes a particular set after a first look, but that gets misconstrued as someone leading).
3. This is followed by effected fanbases far more than other realignment by other fanbases. Fanbases in Group of 5 conferences/BYU have been looking for years for a way into one of the power 5 conferences and thus paying attention for shifts a lot closer. Schools like Maryland, Nebraska, Missouri, Texas A&M, etc might have decided they were ready for new conferences, but most didn't really actively monitor things until it seemed things were in motion. Since their conference situation wasn't horrible either way, they didn't quiete live and die on conference news as much as fans this time. That made things feel a lot quicker and also made it easier to keep things underwraps before things were ready to come out.

Good post. The circus is being caused by the media and fans on social media, not by the Big 12. They are taking the same time frame that the Big 10 took in 2009-10. The Big Ten took questions about when they would decide, and said when they get to the end people will know, and sometimes gave estimates, but they never mentioned teams, and said little else.

The Big 12 is doing exactly the same thing. The difference is that social media is way more wodespread now than 7 years ago, and it is generating much more interest and discussion.

Would it be better if they did it more quickly and quietly? Sure, but there is precedent with the Big 10. It is just that the times have changed.

I thought this thread was about PSU honoring Joepa.

Exactly what I thought, too.

The Louisville to The ACC Time-Line:

11/20/12 Maryland joins the Big Ten
11/22/12 Thanksgiving
11/29/12 Louisville joins the ACC

Keep in mind that until 11/17/12 when Pat Forde called Tom Jurich looking for a quote about Maryland leaving The ACC, Louisville had been focused on getting a Big 12 invite.
(Pretty much putting Louisville through the same stuff other programs are going through now.)

The linked piece outlines the details of what went down from 11/17/12 until The ACC invite was extended.

I've been repeatedly mocked and ridiculed by the Louisville fans by constantly pointing to the bolded as proof that Pat Forde has been, and likely always will be, a Louisville shill. The fact he never called Warde Manuel (former UCONN AD) for a quote about Maryland leaving the ACC is 100% proof of that.

People doubt that Ford is a L'Ville mouthpiece?
