May be an oversight. He said at least 12. Doubt Memphis is out.

If Memphis is out but Rice and Tulane are not then it's because of academics......but I've been told they are not out.....Hell, who knows...

Chuck Carlton stated earlier in the night he was hearing up to 12. McMurphy gets the full scoop per usual in the conference realignment.

The Big 12 has narrowed its list of expansion candidates to at least 12 schools, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy and Jake Trotter.

The 12 schools: Air Force, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Colorado State, UConn, Houston, Rice, South Florida, SMU, Temple and Tulane.

Eight of the candidates still alive in the Big 12's expansion sweepstakes are members of the American Athletic Conference: UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, Houston, South Florida, SMU, Temple and Tulane. Air Force and Colorado State are Mountain West members, Rice is in Conference USA and BYU is an independent.

While at least a dozen schools made the cut, several others did not, including Arkansas State, Boise State, East Carolina, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, San Diego State and UNLV, sources said.

ESPN could not confirm if Memphis, which was also under consideration by the league, made the cut.

As part of the next step in the process, representatives from each school will make in-person presentations to Big 12 officials in Dallas next week, sources say.

The league has said it hopes to make a decision on expansion by the Big 12's regularly scheduled board of directors meeting on Oct. 17.

These schools all either have medium to large endowments, are tier one research schools, or are both. These schools also wouldn't be ranked last by USNWR out of the existing Big XII schools.

When you look at the acceptance rates and other incoming freshmen information, these schools acceptance rates blow away many of the B12 schools. Along with average SAT/ACT, National Merit, GPA, etc.

ECU is out. They have already announced that. I keep seeing Memphis as a continuing candidate. I also ready AF may only considered as football-only potential.

Not a knock against those schools. But Air Force, Rice, SMU, UConn are better academically, and in the end that means nothing.

I don't deny that, but obviously there are many factors at play here. A school could have great academics, but it may not be enough to balance out any athletic issues that may be present.

The conference sent a clear message today I think that says at the very least, they will not consider more regional-focused, unranked, or low research level institutions. Regardless of athletics.
