The official "who's left standing in the B12 expansion?" Topic
Of the "6-8 schools" the B12 supposedly trimmed down to, we have seen...

Houston
UCONN
Cincinnati
Memphis
BYU
Tulane
SMU
Temple
USF
UCF
CSU
Air Force (football only)

A pair of "unnamed" AAC schools (of which the options were Tulane, SMU, Temple... already conflict here)

A report saying no MWC schools (which is now being disputed)

And the only schools we know for sure is out... is ECU, SDSU, New Mexico, and UNLV?

SOME TRIMMING B12

I'll bet there's still other schools out there. If Tulane is being considered, gotta imagine Rice still is too.

I don't trust nothing anymore unless it comes from McMurphy

RE: So let's get this straight...
I think it's safe to say that there are schools most likely to have made the cut, those that probably made the cut, and those that are a longshot to have made the cut. Personally using that criteria I would group them (in no particular order in each group) as such:

Most Likely: UH, Cincinnati, BYU, Memphis, UConn

Probables: UCF, USF, Tulane

Longshots: Temple, SMU, Air Force, Colorado State

You could easily flip CSU and Tulane but past the first 5 it's a crapshoot.

RE: So let's get this straight...
I'm not interested in defending the Big 12. I think they are a bunch of buffoons. However, let's be real here. We know who the serious contenders are and which schools are not serious contenders. Do you really need some blogger to tell us what we already know? I don't think so.

There's not going to be some bombshell announcement that puts Middle Tennessee State in the Big 12. That's the textbook definition of a pipe dream. When they finally get around to announcing there to expands and choices, everyone's going to shrug their shoulders and say, "Yeah, that basically makes sense."

It's not going to be Tulane or Rice or East Carolina or Northern Illinois. It was never going to be the schools. It's flattering to you guys that you were named as a possibility in the first place. It's going to be two of BYU, Houston, Cincinnati and Connecticut. Personally, I think it should be all four but logical thinking is not a strength of that conference.

I would classify the groupings as follows:

Tier 1 - Finalists:
BYU
Cincinnati
Houston

Tier 2 - Outside Looking In (but one school can definitely be selected as #14):
UConn
Memphis
UCF
USF
Temple
Colorado State

Tier 3 - Long Shots:
Air Force (Football-only)
Tulane
SMU

I think this is far and away the most likely scenario, give or take a few more schools in the "long shot" area who weren't told to give up hope yet

Didn't the *Big 12* approach Air Force last time around? But Air Force refused the interest because of competition concerns.

Perhaps the Big 12 was surprised that Air Force is interested this time around.

And, if Air Force is a true candidate, wouldn't Navy also be a legitimate candidate? Navy brings two high-profile OOC games and Oklahoma St.-Navy and Baylor-Navy sound a lot better than many of the other potential expansion matchups.

Can you do a records request of the Naval Academy? Or is this filed under "military secrets"?

Texas-Tech
TCU-Baylor
Oklahoma-OSU
Kansas-KSU
Iowa St.-Cincinnati/Houston
Navy-WVU
BYU-Air Force

If they add 4, I think Temple has a real chance.

If we go all east and UCONN is one of 4 then I would go with Temple, Cincy, and Memphis.

I'll be adjusting the OP as new schools are added to the "no longer in the running" list that is steadily growing

Things we've learned from Stay Cool:

1. He loves pimping NIU.
2. He loves the AAC.
3. He's proud to be a messageboard pimp for his NIU.
4. He only trust a story is McMurphy is reporting it.
5. Ain't too proud to beg (even though he is begging the wrong folks).

Gotta love his spirit.

SDSU is being told they are no longer in the hunt for B12 membership, per a conference source

In other words, the same "most likelies" as 3 months ago. The 19 auditions seems like a lot of noise for nothing.

It's due diligence ... just proving that they weren't missing a better candidate through failure to take a look.

But, of course, they weren't overlooking anybody ... they were, indeed, stretching the bounds of plausibility with their original list.

If half the NIU fans were as "cool" as staycool is, I'd be happy to have them in the AAC. 04-cheers
