2016 Fall sports
I'd figure since we are waiting for the football season to start, might as well take a look at some of the fall sports already in action.

Don't know much about either or their expectations this year, but rough starts by both soccer teams losing all their games in the Invitational we hosted over the weekend. They guys are 0-2 headed into Penn State this weekend and the ladies 0-4 going into ECU.

On a good note the field hockey team is 2-0 including beating #13 Liberty.

Go Dukes. I'm desperate to get back rootin' for the purple and gold

I just left the Field Hockey game as we were up 6-1 toward the end and the much needed rain came pouring down.

Yeah I saw men's soccer lost to NC State 3-2...on three NCSU penalty kicks! Don't think I've ever seen that before...

Let's not forget the Volleyball team either! Off to their best start since 1999 at 6-1, and have the CAA Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, if I recall correctly.

Also, waited on a couple the other day with two kids in high school, one of whom plays field hockey. Pitched them hard on JMU and the Harrisonburg area. Nice folks, and they tipped well.

RE: 2016 Fall sports
Quick update on some of the other sports that are playing this fall.

Men's Soccer has had a tough schedule and they are currently sitting at 0-4-1 going into today's game against LaSalle. Game will be played at Sentara Park. La Salle is off to a 4-1 start to the season. Keep in mind that the Dukes are YOUNG! 13 true freshman and 4 transfers means we have 17 newcomers, compared to 15 returning lettermen.

Men's Tennis just finished up the Seahawk Invitational, hosted by our CAA partner UNCW, winning a doubles championship (congrats to Freshmen Paul Mendoza and Tate Steinour) and a singles championship (congrats to Theophile Lanthiez). HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: We need a better nickname for Theophile, who is currently referred to as "Fifi" by the coaches and on the team's twitter page. We can do better than Fifi. We HAVE to do better than Fifi.

Men's Golf is in the midst of the Golfweek Program Challenge and is currently 2nd heading into today's action (follow along here: http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/le...id=11160). Individually speaking, Poom Pattaropong, Ryan Cole, and Alex Henderson are all in the top 20 of the tournament.

To keep this from going too long, I'll put women's sports in my next post.

RE: 2016 Fall sports
And now the women:

W Soccer has had slightly better success than the men. Also a young team (only 9 senior and juniors on the 28 woman roster... one is from my high school alma mater! Stone Bridge HS REPRESENT!), the team is 2-6 going into Friday's home game against VCU.

W X Country has the reigning CAA RUNNER OF THE WEEK in Senior Carol Strock (Congrats to Carol!!!) and won the JMU Invitational this past weekend. This is after going 1-1 in the UVA Duals (beat Liberty, lost to the Wahoos). Next race is Oct 1 at Lehigh.

W Field Hockey has dropped their last two games against American and #2 Duke after starting out 3-0. Hopefully they get the offense on track at home against New Hampshire this Friday. The team is 3-0 at home, so hopefully the trend continues!

W Golf is also in the Golfweek Program Challenge and are currently in 6th place. Maddisen Cox (5th individually) and Laura Gomez (T-20) are leading the way for the Dukes.

W Volleyball is currently 7-3 and will be playing at GWU this weekend. After sweeping the Cornell Invitational, the ladies went 1-2 in the Fairfield Invitational. On a related note, I'm thinking of going to the Friday games (11 am against N Illinois, and 630 against the hosts), so if anyone wants to join me, I'd love to meet you at the Smith Center. They play Tennessee on Saturday, but I won't be able to make that one.

W Tennis has not played competitively yet, but they get started this weekend in College Park.

Good luck to all our athletes as they continue their respective seasons! GO DUKES!

RE: 2016 Fall sports
Updates on the teams that were in competition yesterday. W Golf finished 6th and M Golf finished 3rd. Men's golfer Poom Pattaropong was named CAA Golfer of the Week. M Soccer lost 1-0 to La Salle, and missed a couple finishing chances (in layman's terms, we shoulda/coulda scored twice). Again, talented, but young team getting valuable experience and games like last night are just part of the growing pains.

RE: 2016 Fall sports
Ryan Cole picks up CAA Golfer of the Week honors, and Men's Golf takes 2nd at Janney Invitational. Miranda Rigg (Soph.) is the CAA Field Hockey Player of the Week after scoring 4 goals over the weekend. JMU FH is 18th in the first RPI poll. Timea Guibe picked up a Single's Tournament championship in women's tennis as the ladies got their season underway. Congrats to all our athletes!

I'll put together a more in depth review either later today or Friday. Depends on when I get tired of job hunting lol.

UPDATE: Miranda Rigg received an honorable mention for the NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) Player of the Week award. Going 2-0 and scoring 4 goals will do that for you!

RE: 2016 Fall sports
Another update on the rest of our Fall athletes

M Golf will compete in the Golfweek Men's Conference Challenge in Iowa this weekend. Based on previous results this season, it should be another successful tournament for the golf team.

M Soccer is having a rough season to say the least. They head to W&M on Wednesday looking for their first win, and then take on College of Charleston Saturday at Sentara Park.

M Tennis participated in the Elon Invitational last weekend. Before the rains caused the cancellation of the final day, we had an all-JMU final in one singles bracket, three other championship round matches featuring JMU athletes, and a 3rd place match. A lot of potential wins left hanging there. Tennis has a long break as they will not compete until Oct 13-17 in Blacksburg.

RE: 2016 Fall sports
W X Country will be competing in the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, PA this Saturday. It is their first competition since Sept 10.

W Field Hockey has won their last three games, including on the road against then #13 ODU and VCU. The FH Dukes have two at home this weekend - vs #12 Delaware on Friday, and Towson on Sunday. FH is 6-2 on the season, including 4-0 at home. Hope they can keep the home streak going.

W Golf is currently competing in the Golfweek Women's Conference Challenge. After the first day, the course is not being kind to the ladies, as they are tied for 16th of 18 teams. Two more days to turn it around though.

W Soccer has flip flopped wins and losses the last eight games heading into this weekend's games against Drexel (Friday) and Delaware (Sunday), both at home. If they win both games, the ladies have a chance to take a 3-1 conference record into the heart of the CAA schedule.

W Tennis competed in the Bedford Cup two weekends ago, and had two winners - Timea Guibe in the Main Draw, and Dylan Owens in the Main Consolation Draw. They were slated to compete in the UVA Invitational last weekend, but it seems like they did not compete. Not sure what happened there. They will compete next in Norfolk Oct 14-16 at the ITA Atlantic Regionals.

W Volleyball is off to a great start in CAA play, beating W&M and Elon while dropping only one set. A long road trip this weekend (Hofstra and Northeastern), but if the VB Dukes continue their play, they could be 4-0 in the conference coming home!

Best of luck to all our athletes as they continue their respective seasons.

Thanks guys. I really enjoy posting these updates. They help me stay connected to my alma mater. I know that they might not get the spotlight (football is the money maker after all), but all our athletes deserve attention.

RE: 2016 Fall sports
Quick update: Men's Soccer drew 0-0 in a lightning shortened game against W&M. The team seems to be agonizingly close to scoring in every game but can't break through that last wall. Aaron Ward-Baptiste (So.) looks like the real deal at forward. Women's Golf had a rough go at the tournament, finishing 17 out of 18 teams. Laura Gomez-Ruiz had two eagles during the tournament though, so kudos to her for that! Certainly much better than I could do.

RE: 2016 Fall sports
M Golf finished 4th out of 12 teams in their competition this weekend. Ryan Cole led the way finishing T-8 in the individual standings.

M Soccer again was agonizing close to their first win on the year. They got a point by drawing against Will and Larry, but fell to CoC in OT at home. One game this week (Saturday) against UNCW

M Tennis will not compete until Oct 13-17 in Blacksburg.

RE: 2016 Fall sports
W X Country finished 15 out of 45 teams in the Paul Short Run, with Carol Strock leading the way to finish 14th out of 404 individual runners in the race. JMU also had two other runners finish in the top 100 in Nora Raher (83) and Olivia Viparina (99). Congrats to all!

W Field Hockey was ranked #19, but opened the weekend losing 1-0 to #10 Delaware. Apparently, the ladies were frustrated by losing and took it out on Towson by a score of 12-0, with Miranda Rigg leading the way with 4 goals. They out shot Towson 50-0 in the game, which seems like quite the beat down.

W Golf will compete next Monday at Pinehurst in a two day tournament.

W Soccer again flip flopped results losing to Drexel 1-0 before rebounding to beat Delaware 3-1. The ladies are consistent at one thing - shooting. They have outshot their opponents in 9 straight games.

W Tennis will compete next in Norfolk Oct 14-16 at the ITA Atlantic Regionals.

W Volleyball did not have a kind road trip, losing to both Hofstra and Northeastern over the weekend. The ladies are back at home this weekend against UNCW (Fri) and CoC (Sun). Hopefully the home cooking will prove advantageous to the ladies.

Best of luck to all our athletes as they continue their respective seasons.
