Number of inappropriate student-teacher relationships growing in Texas

Quote:On the first day of school, two teachers are in the headlines for inappropriate relationships with students.

Friday, Fort Bend County Sheriff deputies arrested Joe Cephas Ross, 51, on child porn charges at his Richmond-area apartment. After his arrest, detectives said they found a “significant amount of child pornography” and that he may have been collecting it for years.

Quote:In a separate case, former Cy-Fair Elementary teacher Nicole Jakubiak was in court today, accused of having sex with a foreign exchange student who was living with her and going to Cy-Ranch High.

"Texas has, by far, the biggest problem in the country with teachers being involved in inappropriate relationships with students," said Terry Abbott, a communications consultant who works with school districts to get teachers better training.

Abbott says we also need tougher laws, specifically for social media.

"Now a teacher can send a kid a text message in the middle of the night and nobody knows it," said Abbott.

The number of cases in Texas from 2011-16 has steadily gone up, according to an investigation by the Texas Education Agency:

2011-12: 156
2012-13: 163
2013-14: 179
2014-15: 188
2015-16: 207

A startling revelation for parents who are sending their kids back to school.

"We trust and believe that they'll protect our kids and that's what they need to do," said parent Cameshia Mason.

Cy-Fair ISD is my district, I grew up a mile away from Cy-Ranch. I think it opened my Sophomore year. It was one of the best districts in Texas...
