2016 Rice Football depth chart
Last season, almost all of the depth chart links were posted in a single thread. I really enjoyed tracking the depth chart changes as red shirts were pulled off some guys, though unfortunately it also helped me realize how many guys were injured as well. So even though this was posted in the WKU thread, I'm giving the depth chart its own thread. I'll try and update it weekly unless someone else beats me to the punch!

8/29/16 depth chart @ WKU

Significant changes from 2016 spring football depth chart:

Offense
TE: no changes other than Hunt transferring
O-Line: Corey Klinger, Matt Terrill, and Isaiah Edwards all move into backup spots, with Kenneth Thompson dropping off
QB: no changes
RB: no changes
WR: German and Lance Wright are healthy and on the chart, Aston Walter makes an appearance

Defense
D-Line: Shantz, Carl Thompson, and Hennessee are healthy and back on the depth chart
LB: Joe Ballard bumps DJ Green from the depth chart
S: Nwakamma and Corbett on the chart
CB: Bickham out for the year with a knee injury and off the chart. Banks is healthy and back as a starter. True Freshmen Ellis and Whitaker join the chart, as does Cimino.

Special Teams
Padgett replaces Carter as deep snapper
Ellerbe and Stewart listed as kick returners
Banks and Stewart listed as punt returners

Thoughts:
* I'm a little bummed Austin Walter isn't listed on either returner depth chart. He had some great returns last season (with unfortunately a few long returns called back after penalties. And I don't like one of the starting CB's (Banks) returning punts unless we really don't have anyone else capable, especially after Bickham's injury.
* Only 2 true freshmen crack the opening week depth chart (Ellis and Whitaker, both CB's). But 10 RS Freshmen and 4 true sophomores add youth to the depth chart.

Stay healthy guys!

RE: 2016 Rice Football depth chart
There are somethings that surprise me about the roster keeping in mind that the depth is very fluid.

Matt Terrill (recruited as Tight End) is the back up at left Tackle. He is a RS Freshman who reported to Rice last year at 6-6/245 (now 6-6/305). He is ahead of Brandon Dawkins a RS Sr (6-7/310). I didn't see that coming. Dawkins is instead backing up Sam Pierce at RT.

Since when has Blaine Padgett been taking on long snapping duties?

Collin Whitaker and D'Angelo Ellis: we knew that they would be in the two deep. However no sign of Joseph Dill. And kind of interesting to see Christian Bertrand as the KAT starter. I still think that Houston Robert should be on offense.

I would like to see the special teams depth two deep (if there is one).

noted only 8 seniors in the three-deep on Offense; 6 seniors on the three-deep on defense......14 out of 60+. Sounds about right for our program (no JC's).

Anyone else notice (and find it amusing) that Cory Klingler when listed as the backup at Left Guard is 6-4/305 but when listed as the backup at Center is 6-3/295?

Well, generally you've got to be bigger to play guard than you do center.

You should see how big he is at tackle!

Part of the center's weight gets shifted to the ball as he leans on it before snapping. The science behind that is settled!

I laughed out loud. Thanks Rick! That reminds me of the story of a church group on a Tour in Italy. As they were touring St. Peter's Cathedral, their tour guide mentioned with confidence that the church had the bones of Peter and began to display to them Peter's skull. One of the church members then spoke up and said that when he was on a tour in Milan, the tour guide held up a smaller skull that the guide claimed to be the skull of Peter. How could this be? Not missing a beat, the St. Peter's Cathedral tour guide said, "Yes, well that's because they have Peter's skull when he was a child!"

Rice depth chart for Army game. Can't find an actual link online yet at either the Army or Rice websites, but I changed the date in the link from the WKU depth chart and this popped up!

Only change from WKU game is Cory Klinger replacing the injured Connor Patterson atop the depth chart at LG, with true freshman Joseph Dill moving into the #2 slot.

So is Bickham injured? I am assuming so but must have missed the news. We cannot afford to lose starters- especially in the defensive backfield

He's out for the year. ACL injury was sustained prior to WKU game.

Is this feeling that I'm having deja vu?

I actually like Rice's depth at CB, though losing Bickham sucks. Be nice if they used a little of the CB depth to improving the pass coverage of the safeties against explosive offenses. More worried about keeping the d-line healthy.

I haven't seen Rice's depth chart for the Baylor game published anywhere.

I prefer the one Colorado put together for Michigan to none at all.

Gee. I wish we would have thought about that. The Colorado line up is hilarious.
At this point in the season we need a bit of levity

Rice depth chart for the Baylor game. Changes from the Army game depth chart:
O-line: Isaiah Edwards jumps from 3rd to 1st on the chart at RT
LB: true freshman Uzoma Akunebu replaces Joe Ballard as the backup at SLB

No other changes. Worth noting that while Ellerbe and Stewart are listed as the kick returners, according to the TV commentators during the Army game, there was at least 1 instance where both Walter brothers were the kick returners. In fact, Austin Walter has 4 kick returns, despite not appearing on the depth chart.

Also, I don't remember hearing anything about it, but Sam Stewart did not play last week against Army. I think Coach Bailiff mentioned post-game or during his Monday press conference that Blasingame and McGaskey did not play last week as well, due to minor injuries.

Any quarterback change? Joking. Not this coaching staff. They rather loose instead of being proactive.

The depth chart for the North Texas game was posted as part of the game notes. No changes from last week.
