That one loss was to ranked Georgetown, too, by West Virginia.

Akron took on and beat two ranked teams in Georgetown and Seattle. One heck of a tournament at Akron.

Buffalo didn't play nearly the same competition as Akron in the opening weekend, but Russell Cicerrone the reigning MAC Player of the Year had five goals in the season opener.

Bowling Green beat IUPUI 4-0 and Appalachian State 3-1. Solid start. Next up: Marshall.

Broncos beat Marshall and Dayton by scores of 2-0.

Next two games are home against the Indiana alphabet soups: IPFW and IUPUI.

The MAC actually did even better. West Virginia beat that ranked Georgetown team 1-0. They lost on Friday to Seattle. Kind of crazy that Georgetown, a team that many think can compete for the title this year, started their season 0-2 against the MAC.

Akron is #1 nationally in the new coaches poll. WMU gets 5 votes.

I don't understand people using the term futbol. That is the translation used in Spanish speaking countries, and not the actual name of the sport.

While we are on this, I also don't get why we have pro soccer teams in America named Real Salt Lake, DC United, and Houston Dynamo. We went to war to get out from underneath the boot heel of the Europeans; I think we can come up with our own nicknames.

Actually, we went to war to save the Europeans from the Europeans (and the other half of the world from Japan, but they weren't playing soccer.)

Hoops isn't the real name of basketball either but it's commonly used. Just a way to break up the writing a little.

If you call it "football" then you have to give the obligatory explanation that it is "soccer" not "real" football.

If you call it "soccer" you have to apologize for being a "entitled" American who reserves the name "football" for American football

If you call it "futbol" everybody knows what you are talking about without further explanation or apology (and as a bonus, you can befuddle a few Texans along the way 03-wink ).

Yikes, got pummelled by Marquette 4-0. On the Women's side, the team is 1-1-1 after a 1-0 win over Western Illinois.

This is a bit off topic, but I've always been surprised Akron hasn't found a way of parlaying their success in men's soccer into a way of being more competitive in women's soccer. Perhaps the fact there are more teams competing in it discourages Akron from investing in it.

It's been a coaching issue, for the most part. The women's soccer program has access to the same top facilities as the men. The men's team may have a (much) better budget that's come after decades of sustained national success, but the women should be able to at least compete in the MAC on their budget. As it is, they usually don't even make the conference tournament.

Good point, I will then allow the use of the term :)

But association football didn't exist at the time of the war of independence. It existed at the time of both wars we fought to save Europeans from other Europeans.

Actually, soccer was 1800's English college boy slang for asSOCiation football instead of rugby union football (rugger). It's only still used in Anglo-Saxon countries where other football codes are bigger deals.

I lived in Newcastle in Oz, where the old "Skippy Soccer" was side by side with post WWII "wog football".
