Interesting look at Rice's program under Neely, written by the Chronicle's A&M beat writer. You know the drill - click on the link, comment on the article and forward it out to your friends asking them to do the same:
RE: Houston Chronicle Article on Rice's Glory Days
It is hard to get younger fans to realize what Rice football was in the old days. I have been going to games since around 1960 so I caught the last of it. It makes it hard for me to accept the reduced status of being just the number 3 team in Houston now when we had been the top team in Houston.
RE: Houston Chronicle Article on Rice's Glory Days
I wish the Owls were no. 3 in Houston, but I suspect Rice is further down the list than that behind the Texans, Cougars, Aggies, Horns, Cowboys, Horned Frogs, Tigers (LSU variety) and maybe others.

That was a great article, thanks for posting the link. I too remember huge crowds at HRS, but during the last decade of the SWC. Texas, A&M and Arkansas always brought out huge crowds. Hearing HRS echo with tens of thousands of Razorbacks fans screaming "Pig Sooey" at once is something I will never forget as I thought it was a joke having never seen or heard about Arkansas before. The kids gong to HRS now to see us play Charlotte and FIU and the like have no idea why that stadium was built or how successful Rice really was.
