RE: West Virginia's chance to escape
If the Big 12 breaks up, WVU will be in trouble. if either the ACC or SEC wanted them, they would have landed there. They'll stay with the remnants of the Big 12.
They were probably at their most valuable during the RichRod years, but it's hard to see them moving the needle enough in 10 years to be added to the ACC. SEC doesn't need anybody. Big 10 took Rutgers and Maryland so they were looking in a completely different direction during their expansion.

The ACC wants no part of WVU.

And, unfortunately for WVU, neither conference wants them either.

There was an interesting read in the Greensboro paper today re: East Carolina and conference affiliation

I could see West Virginia, East Carolina, and Appalachian State being the core of a new conference. Others might include UConn, Temple, Navy, UCF, USF, Cincinnati, Army, and Charlotte.

I'd imagine so.
It's unfortunate but the truth of the matter is this whole realignment issue is mostly just poor timing for WVU.

Unfortunately, what WVU needs most is for the Big 12 to survive. I think it's possible though.

or hang with the Big 12 Remnants. that would probably work out better than ECU, Temple and other AAC teams.

It's an interesting concept. There are several emerging programs on the East Coast that could be a part of a fairly strong G5 league.
If the P5 schools ever split off then it would be better for the G5 to split off into regional leagues rather than trying to copy the large footprints of the Power leagues.
