RE: OT Beckman's New job
Man, tough row to hoe for Beckman. On one hand you can say that if you make your bed, you have to lay in it. But on the other, the guy has been a football coach for 20+ years, what's he going to do be an accountant? He got a big payday for coaching at Illinois, but not sure it set him up for life.
There are coaches who have done similar or worse. How about that Leary guy who lied to Notre Dame and ended up having a good, long career at (I think) Central Florida. Heck, Bobby Knight punched a kid and ended up having a long tenure at Texas Tech.
Everyone makes mistakes, but it looks like his was a career killer. Nobody will touch him with a 10 ft. pole. He can't even drop down to coach HS. Can you imagine the uproar those parents would make? He'll need to be like Gene Hackman's character Norman Dale, in Hoosiers where he'll need to join the navy for 10 years before returning to coaching.

If he was winning at Illinois it wouldn't be a career killer.

Winning would not have covered up the situations he was accused of.

Getting mad at players who are hurt.... trying to get them to play hurt, questioning if they are hurt... hmmmm sounds like every coach I played for

and yep but... if it goes beyond that, which I guess this might have or at least that's the accusation. Threatening a scholarship or something if someone doesn't play hurt? That would be a push IMO. Probably not an uncommon one but one waiting for a player to make the accusation. Coach Beckman won the wrong lottery on that.

RE: OT Beckman's New job
I read the report from Illinois back when he was fired. I've forgotten a lot of the specific details, and it's true that a lot of the accusations could have been interpreted as a coach just trying to get his players to be tough and play through nagging injuries. But there were other more serious accusations too. Like the accusation that he interfered with the ability of his trainers to talk to the team doctors. As I recall he had something like 3 head trainers quit within a short period, like 18 months or something. As I recall there was no proof that they quit because of the coach specifically, but it sure looked unusual.
There was one particular report, as I recall, when the training staff was trying to stabilize a player's neck who had a possible spine injury, that he pushed his way in and told the player to turn his head and look at him just so that the coach could tell the player he was gonna be ok. Reportedly the team doctors chastised him afterwards for that incident.
Don't know how many/if any of the reports were true, but it's one thing to encourage a player to play hurt, but it's a different thing to interfere with the staff that has the training and responsibility to keep the players healthy.

There's personality and there's personality under bigger stress. Might be he wasn't ready for that visible a position. Peter Principle?

My question is how can you take someone named "Bubba" seriously, much less put a great deal of trust in them?
Haven't spent a whole lot of time in these here parts, have ya?
