Huge for the Southern Miss basketball program. This will definitely help in recruiting and in game situations. This helps explains his son coming to Southern Miss.

Great news! If all works out well, I could see Spoon ascending to head coach when Doc retires. But I'm getting way ahead of things.04-bow

Great publicity move. Let's hope he can actually coach college players. Not saying he can't, and I hope he's ridiculously successful, but we don't know yet.

or maybe, that's the point....

I take 'real world' over a schmuck in 'one' positional hire every day and the eighth one...

sometimes the message is worth the absorption rate of a squid....

more specifically, to this genre....

experience is better than tenure IMO....life lessons....

I see nothing negative or questionable with this hire.....

Unfortunately, knowledge of a subject matter doesn't necessarily mean you know how to teach it (see my Zoology prof), nor does it mean you know how to maximize the respective talents of given individuals to max out the potential of the team. Clearly, Spoon knows hoops from his own perspective, but telling everyone to just go out there and be 6'7", 250 isn't going to be an option.

It's not like anyone bets the farm on an assistant hire anyway, though. This has a lot more upside than downside in the grand scheme of things.

RE: Spoon assitant Coach!
He was a great player, but we don't know anything about his coaching/'crootin skills.

The basketball program has a long way to go. I was very much against the Doc hire but I think you gotta give him 2 more years because he stepped in such a shitstorm. The OOC schedule is pretty challenging. FSU, State, then the Hawaii tournament with SDSU, SFA, Tulsa, Utah all in the field. We'll find out pretty early how much the team has improved.

But as someone on the CUSA board said, any excitement around our basketball program right now is a good thing.

I've seen him at plenty of games the past few years. Plainly a great player who loves Southern Miss.

Maybe he'll be a Larry Bird type... far better player and GM than coach. But he's in the best possible spot to have a chance to see if he can coach.

Lots of upside to this. Can't wait to see what he can do over the next couple of years.

Good move by Doc and USM. It may make the difference in getting a player from Mississippi and surrounding states.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Larry Bird take the Pacers to the finals as a coach ?

I saw where Georgia had a press conference announcing a new assistant coach. Except I didn't, because who does that ****?

His extensive coaching experience should produce a SUNWACUSA title within two years, and multiple NCAA appearances. At minimum, ticket sales should skyrocket to watch him sit on the bench. Great move Lucky Charm, now you have "legends" on the payroll in all three sports, being as Ray and Corky are being paid to walk around to be Ray and Corky. Maybe Spoon will roll out the balls at practice at least.

StaTTTues indeed ...

I can always rely on your indept and measured analysis on all things Southern Miss.
And I thought I should be somewhat excited. Thanks for letting me down easy. **

RE: Spoon assitant Coach!
Listened to Doc on The Eagle Hour today. He said we'll see a different caliber ball team this year because he will have the depth to do the things he needs to do to win. Said that's he's been so thin the past 2 years that he couldn't push the kids the way that he wanted to push them or he wouldn't have had enough to play a game. He said they will get mentally tougher or they won't be around his team.
As for recruiting, he said that he "won't get every great basketball player in the state, but they will all have to turn down my offer because we are going after them." He said that Spoon has been coaching at St. Andrews in Jackson and AAU ball the past few years and will bring good things to the program.

He did. Lost in the finals. Previous two years they lost in the conference finals.
