Jimmye Laycock Article: The Decision
As this board includes Tribe superfans, I'm sure many of you remember Laycock's flirtation with "bigger" programs in the early 1990s. Even if you do, our most recent article will make you even more fond of Jimmye than you probably already are. And if you haven't heard this story before, get prepared, because you're in for a treat.

It's almost football season. LET'S GO TRIBE!!!

RE: Jimmye Laycock Article: The Decision
Along the way Jimmye also had major interview offers for head coaching jobs from Navy and North Carolina
which he turned down.

Just my own opinion, but I believe Laycock may stay as Tribe Head Coach through the career of his 2017 major quarterback commitment, Shon Mitchell of Oscar Smith H.S.

The more you read about Mitchell and hear about in the 757 geography, the more convinced one is that this young man may be the biggest qb recruit in many years by W&M. Mitchell, barring injury, may break
every state qb passing record with his great arm leading the best H.S. team in the state. He is a double threat as a runner too...using his speed and athleticism

Jimmye's relationship and development of quarterbacks is proven over the decades....I just don't see him walking away without coaching Mitchell as sort of a final hurrah at W&M.

RE: Jimmye Laycock Article: The Decision
Not to discredit your post BT2, but I think that Kevin Rodgers has had a lot to do with things lately. I think you combine that with the history of mobile QBs and it makes sense to go to W&M.

My big question is whether Rodgers will want to be the next head coach. He has, by far the most higher level responsibilities on his resume, but not as a head coach. Nobody on the staff really has that experience for what it's worth. I'd hate to see someone come in from out of nowhere unless maybe it's a 30 year old ex Tribe player.

Oscar Smith opens up its season tomorrow night at home against USA Today #7 DeMatha High School. Mitchell gets a chance to shine against the big boys right away. On a side note, Oscar Smith's highly successful head coach left after last season to take a head coaching job at an Atlanta area high school for a reported annual salary of over 100K. So Mitchell will be playing his senior season for the guy who lead Phoebus High to 4 state championships.

Not sure if Rodgers even wants to be a head coach. I have no evidence, but I got the idea that Rodgers is riding off with the old band and would stick around as long as Laycock sticks around. After that, I'm not sure he is interested in sticking around. Either way, Laycock's name is on the building. He will have a heavy hand in selecting his successor. And, with his history and coaching ties, why wouldn't he?

DeMatha is coached by Tribe Alum Elijah Brooks. Should be a great matchup!

I agree. I think Rodgers brings a lot to the program, but maybe a great way to move back to Williamsburg to make this the last dance.

A) The offense has gotten better under Rogers. Most notably the QBs are throwing a lot fewer picks. I'm interested to see what they do with a senior QB that has a pretty solid and defined skill set.

B) Rodgers is 64. I don't think he's really a candidate whenever JL hangs it up unless he's keeping the seat warm for someone (and that has its own problems).

C) I hope W&M at least interviews someone outside the W&M family even if they end up hiring a former W&M assistant/player.

Sometimes the player must held accountable for not successful not the coaching staff and this appears to be the story with this young man, sadly . I wish him the best

No sense talking around his name like we've sworn to Omertà...David Corley would definitely be a solid candidate. His love of W&M, offensive experience, and roots in the south make him an ideal HC.

I agree with Rocco...we'll need to interview outside the Tribe family to at least appear that nepotism isn't alive and well in Williamsburg.

I definitely like looking outside, but I do like the rebound effect of someone tied to the program who hasn't been on the staff in a while. Corley is a good name for sure. He has a lot of natural leadership qualities.

Ask Bud Foster how that worked out for him in Blacksburg.

I was hoping Kelchner would return from CNU whenever Coach Laycock retired, but he has decided to retire after this season.

Matt isn't that old though. Remember that all of these guys coaching at State schools are actually getting a State retirement/pension. Once you hit a ceiling in terms of years, it makes sense sometimes to "retire". I'd be surprised if he hangs up the whistle entirely.
