We have traveled to many KU road games and always enjoy going places where the host team fans recommend(rather then the normal tourist areas).

Any recommendations to go before the game(11:00am) to grab a beer or eat?

Recommendations of some sports bars to watch college football Saturday afternoon/evening after the game(going w/ two Auburn fans)?

Places to go out and have dinner/drinks Friday evening?

We are good w/ taxi/uber so location not a big deal.

Thanks so much and looking forward seeing your University and city.
04-cheers I just want to say WELCOME to Memphis. I hope that we see you and Kansas on a yearly basis if we can get in the Big XII

Only if they stay down town. If not, Bryant's for Breakfast.

Summer at Graham. Easy access to Sam Cooper Blvd which exits into E Parkway and goes straight to the stadium

A lot of BBQ mentioned - and for good reason, best pork BBQ in the world in the Memphis area! I grew in Memphis & return regularly but there has been no mention of Interstate BBQ on 3rd near I-55. Not a great area of town but still the best BBQ sandwich in town IMO. I generally get by there going or coming from Atlanta to get my Interstate fix.

Friday sounds like some great options downtown. We will be getting there early and will take the advice of some posters and drive around to check out the sights, go to the mentioned hotels, etc.

Sounds like not a whole lot of options or places open pregame so might need to grab breakfast and wonder around the tailgating.

For after the game sounds like Overton is where to go to hang out and watch college football(need to see the Auburn game at 6:00). Might even check out the Cooper Young Festival.

What are the thoughts on watching games later at Max's? Seems like it's a little closer to where our hotel is.

Lots of great options on bbq. Will have to do one of them after the game on Saturday or even Friday afternoon.

Any other ideas, recommendations, etc. please keep them coming....I am saving it all. Thanks again!!

If you're looking for some local beer to try out, check out anything Memphis Made, Wiseacre, or Ghost River

http://www.memphismadebrewing.com/

http://wiseacrebrew.com/

http://www.ghostriverbrewing.com/

Memphis Made fireside is a personal favorite of mine.

might want to go to the breweries as well! also, local midtown is a good place to watch games during the day. If you are into soccer at all, Celtic in Cooper Young is a good place to pregame and get food/ drinks and watch some EPL games.

Celtic is wonderful! Tell Allan, the bartender, that Cary sent you. I do think it doesn't open until 11:00 a.m. weekdays, and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. Their weekend brunches are super.

nah, its soccer season. It's open early on the weekends. I was there at 8:30am last Saturday to watch Spurs/Everton.

Yeah Allan is good people, but the whole staff at Celtic is really. Been going there for years.

They open at 7.45a Saturdays for soccer. Will definitely be there before the Kansas game.

RE: Traveling to Memphis Game Need Advice
I'm late to this thread. Here's a few thoughts...

First (and off-topic somewhat), state and president streets are OK these days. Heck, lots of new residential units on state streets.

OK, back to topic.

There's lots of great info in this thread.

Beale Street is the touristy thing to do. It will be packed and it may get a bit rowdy.

The Midtown area includes Overton Square and Cooper Young. These two areas are kind of a tame version of Beale St. Lots of locals hang out here.

Overton Square
Hot Spot Guide: Overton Square
Visit these sites to learn what to expect at OS. You can check out the restaurants and their menus. Keep in mind that Lafayette's Music Room has live music. Check the link to plan ahead.

Cooper Young is a bit more, hmm, artsy. Is that the word? Eclectic, maybe? Check out the link for restaurants and menus.

As someone mentioned, the Cooper Young Festival is Sat 9/17/16 9:00 am - 7:00 pm. It's like a huge outdoor block party (they expect over 130,000 this year) with arts, music & crafts from all over.

While Overton Square and Cooper Young are both in Midtown, they're about 1.5 miles away. No problem, though. Ride the Roo is a convenient and economical way to shuttle between the two areas -- and various points between. (Yes, there are some pretty cool places along the way.) A ride is $2. An evening pass is only $5. You can't beat that for safe passage around entertainment districts.

Oh, and to put it in perspective, the Overton Square/Cooper Young areas in Midtown are only about 4.5 miles from Beale St.

And no trip to Memphis would be complete without a visit to The Memphis Zoo. It's listed as one of the nation's Top 10 Zoos in the country:
  • Top 5 in USA Today's Reader's Choice
  • Top 10 by Fodor's Travel

The Memphis Zoo is proudly one of only 5 zoos in North America (one of only 4 in the US) to house pandas.

Back to Downtown...

The South Main Arts District has some great restaurants and art galleries. The National Civil Rights Museum and The Orpheum Theatre are here, too.

One other suggestion....

If you like pizza, and it fits into your schedule, we have a local "chain" here in town that you need to experience.

Pyro's

Several locations around town. It is a good, fast, inexpensive format. You go in and they build your own pizza. Thin crust, excellent variety of toppings, cooked for you, delivered to your table very quickly. There is one on Union, close to Overton Square. Don't know if you have this concept where you live, but I gotta tell you. If I want pizza for lunch on a work day or evening and want it to be not cost prohibitive, this is my choice.

I have never taken someone who has never been there and gotten a less than stellar review...

Pyro's is awesome! The one near me has really long lines near peak times though.

No idea how so many people could miss out on mentioning Bass Pro at the Pyramid. Great attractions and a Hotel for travelers to stay while visiting.

Awesome!

Is Celtic walking distance to the Liberty Bowl or more of an Uber distance?

Sounds like if taking transportation need to be there before 10:00am.

Thanks!

It's definitely within walking distance. Probably a mile from Celtic's door to the entrance of Tiger Lane.
