Nick just announced that he is leaving the DNR and appears that he may be leaving journalism as well. The MBB Dukes will have a new beat reporter this year.

Been a lot of turnover at the DNR lately. Selig, Stoss, Jones, and now Sunderland. Selig is now back in the business for the Baltimore Sun.

I think it just shows how difficult the field is these days and especially in the smaller markets.

While still a lot of turnover, it's not too unsual at a small town paper like the DNR. DNR is where new journalists go to get some experience before getting jobs with major publications.

Also Selig never left the journalism, he just went to grad school out in Missouri.

I think Stoss left journalism as well. I'm sure many at newspapers are rethinking their career due to the business becoming more digital.

Unfortunately there's just no money in journalism and it's just getting worse. Even those covering professional sports on the beat don't make much money.

Thought he was working at GW for their magazine?

Dean Keener left basketball after being at JMU.

He is. It would be interesting to see how the hometown newspaper reporter in San Marcos gets along with Withers.

It will get interesting about three quarters through the schedule.

When they are 0-9. Withers will be fired at the end of season 3 or will move on before he gets the hook.

The DNR has lost Chris Simmons, Matt Jones and Nick Sunderland over the past several months....that's really hurt the quality of the DNR sports writing as it relates to JMU, no doubt. I had been impressed by the quality of that section of the paper for a long time now, and we may never see it return to that level again.

IDK the new beat writer is on fire right now. I love the coverage he's providing. TBH I wonder why he's here coming from WVU and Morgantown, seems like a step down to me.

Because covering football is a step up from some of the lesser sports he was covering there, such as couch burning.

Ah makes sense. Ive seen pics of him on the football field and on court at basketball so I just assumed he had covered them. That's why I said step down. But if he was covering Olympic sports, like the aforementioned couch burning then yeah it's a step up.

This new guy, Greg Madia so far is GREAT. Best coverage I have seen in of JMU sports/football since Mike Barber was working the DNR. Matt Jones/Matt Stoss/Nick Sunderland were OK, but not at the same level ---- where they actually seem to understand the sport they are reporting upon.

RE: Nick Sunderland
we had a couch burning squad for a few years. We brought in some transfers from Md and WVU. JMU discontinued the program right when it really took off and started getting some national attention / press.

We could have been top 10, easy. Damn admin.
