Bartow Hired as Assistant Basketball Coach

August 16, 2016

TAMPA, AUG. 16, 2016 – USF head men’s basketball coach Orlando Antigua announced on Tuesday the hiring of Murry Bartow as an assistant coach.

“Murry is a great addition to our team,” said Antigua. “He is someone who has great integrity and a basketball pedigree. I have known him for a few years and have admired the type of person he is and the success he has had. I’m excited to have him as a member of our staff.”

Bartow served as the head coach at East Tennessee State for 12 years, from 2003-2015, and finished with a record of 224-165, a winning percentage of .576, the third-best in school history. Bartow led the Buccaneers to four conference titles and six postseason appearances including three NCAA tournaments. In his first year with the program, Bartow was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year after winning the conference with a 15-1 record and going 27-6 overall, the most wins for a Bucs team in 13 years.

In 2006-07, Bartow once again led the Bucs to one of the best seasons in school history, as the team went 24-10 overall and 16-2 in Atlantic Sun play to finish as the regular season champions. The squad earned a trip to the National Invitation Tournament, and for the second time in four seasons, Bartow was honored by his peers with the A-Sun Coach of the Year award.

Prior to ETSU, Bartow was the head coach at UAB from 1996-2002, the same program that his father, Gene Bartow, began in 1978. Bartow accumulated a record of 103-83 and made three postseason appearances with the Blazers, including the 1999 NCAA tournament.

Bartow spent seven seasons as an assistant on the UAB staff from 1989-96 and developed the reputation as an energetic teacher and recruiter, and was often mentioned as one of the nation’s top defensive strategists.

Bartow began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Indiana (1985-87) and worked with the Hoosiers’ 1987 NCAA Championship team. He then worked for two seasons as a full-time assistant and recruiting coordinator at William & Mary (1987-89).

A 1980 graduate of Birmingham’s W.A. Berry High School, Bartow was an outstanding point guard, earning All-Jefferson County honors and his team’s MVP award as a senior. He played basketball at UAB from 1980-85, and was part of four NCAA Tournament teams, three Sun Belt Conference championship teams and UAB’s 1984 Great Alaska Shootout title team.

Bartow earned his B.A. in business administration from UAB in 1985, and his master’s degree from Indiana in 1987. Bartow, a native of Warrensburg, Missouri, is married to the former Tammy Earley of Birmingham, a registered nurse and former UAB cheerleader. They have three sons, Alec, Stephen and Connor.

There was a game at USF where Murry had to be restrained by the assistants. The fans there gave him hell. Anyone remember The Sheriff. Funny how things come around.

USF is on the north side of Tampa. Why do you think it should be on the south side.

Murry has the name Bartow, but that is not a qualification to be an AD. Murry did not have good schmoozing skills. As a coach, it was his way or the highway. He suspended half the team one game for having facial hair. He would not make a good AD. Some may think he might be better than Ingram, but that does not make him a qualified AD.

His nose was so far up Gottfried's ass I'm surprised he didn't get an assistant job at NC State.

Yet he didn't suspend himself for missing his own coach's show once; as a result Gary Sanders got to chat with himself for an hour. I won't even get into the assistant coach hire that almost ended up costing us an NCAA tournament bid.

I do not think he would be a good AD.

I am happy he has a job and hope he does well. He is a coach and needs to coach.

He will always be a part of the Blazer family, and I will always wish him well.

However, I would not want him back at UAB in a coaching or AD capacity.

RE: Murry Bartow to USF
Had the order of his hiring been different he might have had a different path here.

He did have make some good hires with some of his assistants.

Towards the end though he couldn't recruit high school players & had to go juco way too much.
