US Aid Workers Beaten, Raped by South Sudanese Soldiers
Foreign aid workers, including some Americans, were beaten and raped by South Sudanese forces recently...and the UN peacekeeping force and US embassy just left them to fend for themselves.

Why, yes, this is the same South Sudanese army that Obama and Hillary have aided and supported. Some of the rapists were child soldiers, which South Sudan is permitted to use because of special waivers granted to them by Obama and Hillary. Americans were targeted and singled out. Another victory for Hillary's foreign policy.

Quote:The soldier pointed his AK-47 at the female aid worker and gave her a choice.

"Either you have sex with me, or we make every man here rape you and then we shoot you in the head," she remembers him saying.

She didn't really have a choice. By the end of the evening, she had been raped by 15 South Sudanese soldiers.

On July 11, South Sudanese troops, fresh from winning a battle in the capital, Juba, over opposition forces, went on a nearly four-hour rampage through a residential compound popular with foreigners, in one of the worst targeted attacks on aid workers in South Sudan's three-year civil war. They shot dead a local journalist while forcing the foreigners to watch, raped several foreign women, singled out Americans, beat and robbed people and carried out mock executions, several witnesses told The Associated Press.

For hours throughout the assault, the U.N. peacekeeping force stationed less than a mile away refused to respond to desperate calls for help. Neither did embassies, including the U.S. Embassy.

The Associated Press interviewed by phone eight survivors, both male and female, including three who said they were raped. The other five said they were beaten; one was shot. Most insisted on anonymity for their safety or to protect their organizations still operating in South Sudan.

I'd love to hear the reasoning from our Embassy there.

Agreed. I'd like to drop all governmental foreign aid, with exceptions made for huge natural disasters like tsunamis and whatnot.

South Sudan is in serious trouble.

I went to Juba in 2013 with an oil company.

Juba is dirt roads and the city is more like a camp than an actual town.

The handwriting was on the wall back then. Sending aid to a country like that actually does more harm than good.

So what's y'all's plan? The South Sudaneese (mainly Christian btw) were getting wiped out by the Islamists in Khartoum. I'd argue that the South Sudaneese are little better, but I fail to see what solution you'd propose. There's no friggin economy at all and lots of guns. So they go to war with each other and everyone else there to fight over crumbs. Unless you propose we park the US Army there or dump 100 billion in aid with them, I'm not sure there's a solution or blame to be assigned.

This sh*t goes on too in Haiti. There's no one else to rob or assault so aid workers bear the brunt of the social ills.

The OP seems to think that the US should send in the military to protect the aid workers. Or that the Obama administration is somehow negligent in the situation. Or that US support for the independence of South Sudan was a bad move.

Being an aid worker is dangerous, especially in conflict zones. I applaud their courage, but if the only alternative is to send in the military, I'm inclined to say 'unfortunately we have to pull out our aid workers at this time. If the UN or someone else wants to organize some sort of mechanism to keep the peace, we will support it. But at this point, we are going to have to pull our workers out for their safety.'

Or that we should have let the Islamist government in Khartoum continue to commit war crimes against the Christian South Sudaneese. If Sudan was still occupying South Sudan, there would be more violence and dislocations. The best way to look at South Sudan is that it is 'better bad news' than the awful news of the Sudanese Civil War.

Africa is messy. Real messy. The term government is kind of a 'loose term'. A lot of them have no authority at all.

I think AID workers who go there are at their own risk.

While I feel bad for the women this happened too, at the same time it is hard to have too much sympathy. This is very common in Africa and it is well publicized. In some African countries, the majority of women are raped at least once in their lifetime. In war torn areas, that number is even higher.

African is a lost cause. It's always been very tribal, which makes co-existing difficult to begin with, but now you also have the intrusion of militant islam across the continent. Africa has a very bleak future unless you like sharia law.

It sounds like the strongest and most stable countries in Africa need to step up and promote peace and safety on the continent. It's not America's job to do that. I don't think religion plays any role in the continent once south of Egypt and Libya. If anyone claims to be Christian or Muslim, it's probably only during the day while at night they continue on with their shamanistic religions.

I always wonder at the person that says they want to make a difference, but want to make a difference in a foreign country. Are there not opportunities for you to make a difference in your own neighborhood? Your own city? Your state?

What can you provide to South Sudan that your neighborhood could benefit from instead?
