Rice golfers at U.S. Amateur
It's pretty cool we have 3 golfers at the U.S. Amateur this week at Oakland Hills (Bloomfield Hills, MI). The top 64 players after tomorrow's stroke play advance to the medal round. It's not going to easy for any of the three, but Mitch Meissner had the best round of the three Owls for sure, shooting a 74 (2 over par) on the tougher South course. He's tied for 128th currently, and probably will need to shoot under par tomorrow on the easier North course to have a chance at advancing.

Mario Carmona shot a 76 on the North Course and is tied for 196th. Kevin Reilly shot a 78 on the South Course and is tied for 258th. There are a lot of golfers in Michigan (312) and the scores range from -5 to +14.

Live scoring is at http://www.usga.org/championships/2016/u...oring.html

Has Rice ever had as many -- or more -- student golfers (not counting alums) qualify for the U.S. Amateur?

Scoring on the South Course today was 1.6 strokes higher than on the North Course -- 73.7 - 72.1.

Every Top 10 golfer today (-6 to -4) had played on the North Course.

Through the top 85, (+1 and better), 70 percent (60/85) played on the easier course today. Through the top 49 (Even par and better) it was also 70 percent (34/49) and the same for the Top 36 (-1 and better), 25/36.

It looks like golfers will need at least a two-day score of even par or better to have a chance to be in the playoff for the final spots in the match-play bracket. For Mitch, he'll need at least -2 in tomorrow's round, which 23 golfers did today on the North Course.

Mario will need at least -4 (which 10 golfers did today) and Kevin (who had 2 double bogies today) will need at least -6 tomorrow, which one golfer did today on the easier North Course.

Go Owls!!
