UMass getting ready for prime time

AMHERST, Ma.–Mark Whipple sounded like a kid who wanted to show off the new toys he received for Christmas. The veteran University of Massachusetts football coach, now in the third season of his second tour of duty at UMass, was giving a guided tour of the 39 million dollar football performance center, which puts UMass on an equal or better footing with most Power 5 conference schools.

In his office overlooking the end zone of a newly renovated McGuirk Stadium, Whipple could see what had been an equipment storage shed, which had served as the headquarters for UMass football during Whipple’s first go-around with the Minutemen.

Whipple, who has a Super Bowl ring from his days as an assistant coach in the National Football League, won a then 1-AA national championship with those facilities. The rest of this article is available to subscribers only – to become a subscriber click here.

Look at my sig. Does that mention UMass?

Do I think UMass is a better add than NIU? Yes, I do.

Both are projects but at least UMass has a high ceiling. They just need to keep that spigot open and keep upgrading.

UMass would be better off dropping football altogether and converting McGuirk into a stadium for a sport their fans actually care about: Lacrosse.

Edit... McGuirk, even after dumping $39 MM into it, still does not have restroom facilities for the fans.

UMass will never excel in football. What kid is gonna want to play in freezing weather in October? Best thing they can do is put a dome on it and try to be comparable to Syracuse.

I wouldn't say never but their facilities definitely need some improvements to help with elevating the project. Bathrooms would be a great start. I also do think their basketball is a bit overrated considering how long ago they accomplished much in the sport. But basketball can be turned around with 1 good coaching hire or one good recruit and they still have a solid brand name so I'm not too worried for them straightening that out

MACtion is killing our fanbase and our fans are tired of dominating the MAC over teams like EMU, Ball St, Kent St, etc. A change of scenery to a conference with teams more on our level football-wise makes sense for us. Also strengthens the AAC in football and helps to solidify the hold on the access bowl by adding another access bowl contender.

OK, was there and for the ribbing about bathrooms. We have them, it's not like ODU.

See that building, beyond the end zone, and space were end zone seating will be going, are the rest rooms.

Yes we need an expansion, here is an overview of the stadium.
The Performance Center in the end zone and Press - Sky Box cost 39 Million.
The new Championship Center for BB cost 33 million.

Have no idea how much the other sports improvements cost but we are investing, but obviously we need to still continue especially with the stadium expansion.

They are still showing option 8 boards, which actually builds over the existing stadium.

RE: UMass Hype Train Has Left the Station
this article is flat out manipulating tho..i just did research on this

"which puts UMass on an equal or better footing with most Power 5 conference schools."

first of it was 34.5mil not 39..but thats irrelevant
this is simply a weight training facility, proper locker rooms and a basic press box for the media ..things it lacked before

how is that equal or better footing with most Power 5 conference...this isn't an indoor practice field or something high tech
please name me 1 power 5 that has worse facilities?
getting basic necessities isnt something to brag home about

a better saying is which puts UMass on an equal or better footing with most MAC conference schools..

the stadium is still horrific
