Big XII: If BYU, then AFA or CSU a better combo?
If the AFA is back on the table for the Big XII, a discussion here way back was that the AFA would bring a big, worldwide TV audience just like BYU.
Is that true, and if so would it make AFA much more attractive than CSU if the Big XII expands by two to the west (eastern expansion not part of this discussion)?

I'd go with Colorado State.
They have a $200 million dollar new stadium coming online.

Byu and Afa football only is a great combo. Big 12 could add 2 others for full membership and go with 12 all sports and 14 for football.

With BYU, it's still Texas and allies wanting Houston and Oklahoma and WVU wanting UC.
IMV, the rest is just proving that they did due diligence and did not overlook somebody because Texas had their preference and Oklahoma had their's.

Air Force doesn't bring much to the table.
I would question whether they have a world-wide following, as well.

It seems to me they would have the same following as Navy and Army.

The Armed Forces Network, or something like that? So mainly military service folk stationed around the world? Or do vets and/or the general public have access to AFA games?

People keep saying things like "Air Force/Navy/Army bring this huge audience", but if they actually did then why are their ratings so low and not in a power conference? Also their players, especially the linemen can't be as big as the other P5 schools. They have weight requirements for cadets.

They don't have the tradition, or following of either.

Again, AFA doesn't have the tradition or following of Army and Navy.
There is a reason why Army/Navy has a special place in the broadcast world. Army/AFA or Navy/AFA do not.

I think the service academies really do not want P5 status, as they have weight/size restrictions.

At this point if two are added from the west I'm leaning toward BYU and CSU as my favorites of those obviously available. AFA has a very nice campus and of course excellent mission; be sure to visit them if ever in that part of Colorado.

Fresno State didn't even apply for the big 12 membership

And what audience does Rutgers bring?
The masochist demographic?
The service academics aren't P5 for a variety of reasons yet Army still has a nice contract with CBSN and 30,000+ in the stands. Not bad.

RE: Big XII: If BYU, then AFA or CSU a better combo?
I still think the wisest move for the schools who are not chosen is to get together and form their own large conference - perhaps a merger of sorts of the American and the Mountain West. That would allow them to consolidate the leftover money.
I also think that if three of the 16 members of that league were the service academies, that would add to the appeal of the conference.
For the sake of this exercise, let's say the Big 12 takes BYU and Cincinnati. That would leave you with the following schools (among others):
AMW - East
1.) Army
2.) ECU
3.) Memphis
4.) Navy
5.) Temple
6.) UCF
7.) UConn
8.) USF
AMW - West
1.) Air Force
2.) Boise State
3.) Colorado State
4.) Fresno State
5.) Nevada
6.) San Diego State
7.) SMU
8.) UNLV
The downside of having such a widely spread out conference is obvious. It would be difficult for fans to travel to those games. However, the upside is you would basically be taking every major brand outside of the Power 5 and you would consolidate the money that way. Also, you could televise games in every major time zone – making you more flexible (and valuable) for ESPN and/or Fox.
